I was given 30 days in jail but upon my purge of $5000 I would be released asap said the judge.

Luckily I had the $5000 on the spot. :D

If you had it then why did it even come to that...... Do you have some type of issue with supporting your child?

Not paying for your children in the first place makes you look like the ultimate douchebag. Having it on hand and going all the way to court and wasting everyone's time makes it worse. Stop giving all non custodial parents a bad name.

I belong to Fathers and Families and you will not find a more sympathetic person to the parenting issues around non custodial parenting and issues around child support but don't be a fucking idiot and post shit like this.

My children are all over 18 so my child support stopped several years ago, court had an issue with the time I served in Iraq and no payments were made directly to the court.
Court claimed I owed $10,000 but reduced it to $5000 when I supplied the proof of direct payment to my ex wife that she did not report.

I am going through something similar.
When my ex had the kids, we had a private agreement and I paid - even for things like half a toothbrush, half a pair of socks, etc. (he used to send me itemised accounts, ffs!)
When the kids came back to me, he paid only the barest minimum, and I never asked him for half a fucking toothbrush.
Now he's working, and claiming to still be on minimum wage so he pays almost nothing.
We will end up in court... luckily, I have all those ridiculous accounts he sent me.

The court can be pretty harsh, I explained to them my kids needed things right away at times so sending a payment of $500 through the court would have taken at least a week for my ex wife to collect, so at times I made a direct payment to my wife via check.

Judge made it clear any and all payments must go through the court to be counted. But, I had the check stubs and my ex also agreed that I did pay her, the $5000 was my paid in full amount.

I remember my first divorce I stood up to "object" to something the judge had said (I had seen ALL the Law and Order shows).

Before I could stand fully upright he told me if I didn't sit my butt back in that chair and keep my mouth close that I would spend the next three nights in the jail.

TV is so unreal.

Exactly, The judge knew I had the money but he informed me that 30 days in jail is mandatory until you pay the amount the Judge ordered.
He also said the court can suspend your license at anytime, we can take your home and give it to your wife, we can take your vehicles and clear out your checking account as well as take your tax refund.

He said men that owe $100,000 or more have had their homes taken away, if the man does not agree he stays in jail FOREVER until he signs the quit claim deed over to the wife.

the child support issue can be total bullshit. both ways. some fathers care not one squat, and they are the ones who manipulate the system to avoid paying it. and then there are mothers who are extremely vindictive and manipulate the courts.

when things began for me, i fell behind by by the tune of $1500 while in jail and afterwards when i was semi-homeless and jobless. they took my drivers license.
then i got this job and in less than a year i got everything paid up and current and got my drivers license back. and stayed current. even after my ex refused to honor the court order for visitation since mid may 2010. in june of 2011 i get a letter in the mail from the BCSE notarized and signed by my ex in the state of washington and filed through the county court house that the BCSE was no longer accountable to collect child support from me or my employer.
caught some shit from a family member about not supporting my kids until i showed them the letter. they asked me, why are you not sending anything to her? (apparently she NEVER informed them that she left the state without informing me or the court), and i said, when she provides me with an address of where to send it, or she can file papers in court and then explain to the judge why she left without informing anyone. that could get her jail time.

i could be an asshole and have contempt charges filed on her and have her brought bck to the state to face trial. but i will NOT put my kids through that.
