It looks as though I will soon enter the ranks of the unemployed. As a potentially soon-to-be displaced worker, I thought (just for shits and giggles) I'd ask the GB for advice. So, folks, what's the next step? ride the unemployment benefits train til she runs out? begin a new profession? go back to school again? or <gasp> go job hunting?

what say you?

School and job hunting. But really the main thing you should do is create a LinkedIn profile and connect with all your past and current co-workers. Get that network strong and then you need to get your resume up to date. Only you can decide if you need a new career. It's still a tough economy and I had to move cities to find a new job.

Thanks, I'll look into all those things.

I have already extended an offer to a Virginia woman as an assistant. She seems willing, ready, and ample breasts, I mean able to complete most assignments with minimal training. AND, I've heard rumors she is receiving additional training from one of our resident pros here.

I know this doesn't help, but, I can only take on so much at one time.

a day late and a dollar short. . .again.

<sad face>

I'm so sorry to hear about your job loss. May I ask for a vague idea of what your current financial situation looks like? Do you have enough of a cash cushion that this could be a "the world is your oyster" moment? Could you use this as an opportunity to further your education and pursue your dream career? Were you already working your dream job? And what's your gut telling you?

IMO, you are a prince among men. This ample-breasted, er, vastly qualified, future employee of the JAJ is grateful for the opportunity to relocate for the position of her dreams. The training from your resident pro is also appreciated and enjoyable.

My heart says I need to run for President.

Even though I'm a woman, I'm the best man for the job.

If Jim truly were a prince he'd keep me out of politics.
It would be the patriotic thing to do.

I absolutely agree with the "create a LinkedIn profile", if you haven't already. Make sure it is up to date. Good luck, Ms. ~Time!!

Sorry to hear that, unless it's a good thing. And in many cases it is. You know that "one door closes and another opens" thing...

Do you want to change careers completely? I'm not sure what you do now but from what I do know it's later in the game and it's better to persue only what makes you happy. Kids out of the house? Big mortgage? College to save for?

And don't feel too badly about the unemployment thing because the only thing harder than feeling anxious about the future is feeling anxious without at least some income.

Great something else to make my paranoia shoot off the charts.

Ya know, Image, I'm not too upset about this whole thing, except for the forced disbanding of a group of people I have come to love like family. But from a personal standpoint, I'm actually excited to see what life has in mind for my next chapter.

I have to preface this by mentioning that my area may be different than your area, let alone that various reasons why there are those who grab a job faster than others, be it experience, age, etc.

With that said, I have been searching for a year. Do not stop looking. Many people are hiring where I am, it is just that the pool is narrow and it is a buyer's market. It is a matter of right time, right place.

For me, I relocated to an area where many are hiring in fields I am interested in and have experience. Without giving much detail, I needed to relocate.

I found out a few months ago that it is very likely my resume and cover letter (I received blank stares from people when I mentioned I had a cover letter) were thrown away.

There was a doctor who was not hiring but HAD to meet me. She said how she likes to meet interesting people in the area and that (and she said this verbatim) "I usually leave this up to my office manager, but she would be too intimidated by you."

That was then I realized this was going to be a pain in the ass. Shortly after, I was talking to this guy who is an engineer who worked for Grumman Aerospace. He said he tried for three years to get a job here... no one would touch him. He works with his wife who is a veterinarian and runs a mobile vet service and he is quite happy.

Regardless, get unemployment, keep an eye out, take deep breaths and appreciate the free time you have.

I wish you all the best in your search. Searching within and without.

I'm retired. I worked like 45 years.

Unemployment usually seems like the end of the world but its a dandy opportunity to change careers if youre not queer for what you do. I used unemployment to do something new. And once or twice I started at zero pay, to get my foot in the door. Give some serious thought to what you love to do, then look for a gig doing it.

I completely understand. I lost a job several years back that disbanded our group. A few of us still stay in touch. I realize now that I was too complacent there and if I wasn't forced I probably wouldn't have gone out and found the job I have now. Turns out this is the best, most flexible, greatest benefits job all around for me. I actually look forward to going to work every day...

It is an exciting time for you!

One of my interview tricks is to bring along 2 dozen donuts (assorted). It never fails to make a great impression and break the ice. Donuts kick pansy stationery's ass.

I also used snappy answers to the usual questions. Employers care about a few things: Reliability, performance, pay, and social skills. And when asked about what I bring to the table I said, YOU AINT GONNA HAVE NO OMG!!! ERUPTIONS WITH ME. YOU AINT NEVER GONNA SEE ME ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE PAPER. I NEVER FUCK THE SAME THING UP TWICE. I NEVER KILLED ANYBODY.

I got mine, so you do it your way.

If you can, start a zero expense business on the side. Something where the asset is your brain and knowledge and that doesnt require big investments. Throw one or two non office hours into it a day and hope it grows legs. You never know.

unless you are furthering your education long periods of unemployment is not appetizing to future employers. you appear lazy to them.
