"Labour MP Jo Cox dies after being shot and stabbed in her constituency near Leeds"

Exactly where is the constituency located in a female body? (PM me if necessary.)

Should be in the Political forum (and there already is a discussion there.) I see no erotic connection to this topic.

Would you have said the same if it read "was shot and stabbed in her home town?"

I don't think the difference between political terms in England and the US is the issue, and I certainly don't think the assassination of an elected representative is an appropriate occasion for any grammatical joke.

Does the OP actually find the violent murder of a wife and mother to be an appropriate subject for humor? I feel sorry for him, truly.

She was shot and stabbed while doing her elected task as the representative of her community.

It is a sad day for democracy.

I believe "constituency" means the same thing in either country.

Spillover of the General Board mentality into the AH?

There is overlap, but in England, "constituency" refers not only to the body of people represented, but to the area delimited for representation. In Canada, we call it a "riding;" in the US, I believe there are various terms referring to the specific level of representation, such as "Congressional District."

In this case, the reference was clearly to the territory, and not the population represented, which is why I referred to "home town" for RR's benefit.

Pilot and Lori are right. This is exceptionally poor taste. Not in AH, please.

My nature is to always set a low bar for people. Yet, they always find ways to slink under it. This does belong in the GB where everyone there thinks everything but racism is funny

This is something Lancecaster over there would post, and he's scum.

I suspect that the 'levity' may be due to the attack not happening in some part of the USA, where it's seriousness might have been taken differently.

However,
A "constituency" is a defined geographical area for the purposes of representation (we only elect Members to the 'lower' house).
Unfortunately, we don't have the Death Penalty any more (but that's a different subject all together).
Condolences to her family.

I'm supposedly insensitive.
I point out that some idiot and its editor are apparently unable to write a meaningful sentence in the English language. No one seems to care about grammar. Strange, we are supposed to be writers.
It seems that nothing can be done about the lady, sad. (We have a guy, here in Belize, who claims differently, some nonsense about Baron Samedi (Saturday,) but I wouldn't know, there are some places that I won't go, unpaid.
I may be insensitive, but I would at least talk to fuck up and its editor about English grammar. Why is it that the rest of you sensitive people won't?

It's a perfectly acceptable sentence in contemporary usage; such a structure is only amusing when the object of "in" seems ambiguous. As I proposed, I doubt RR would have started a thread if a writer had inscribed "she was shot and stabbed in her home town near Cleveland.:

Yep, nothing wrong with that sentence even in American English. One of the Webster's definitions of the word, used as a noun, is "an electoral district." You can get egg on your face by running by the seat of your pants rather than double-check researching the nits you want to pick. It particularly doesn't work when you make a tragedy seem a joke by overlooking the tragedy and going for the trivial (even if the point had been right). That, indeed, is what we'd call insensitive--even if the point of English had been right (which it wasn't, compounding the insensitivity).

I have the same problem with the above sentence.
"She was shot and stabbed, by an assailant, near Cleveland."
"She was shot and stabbed, by a constituent, near Cleveland."

You need to give it up, RR. The commas in the sentences in your last post are unnecessary and make the sentences awkward.
