Conservative ‘Homophobic Hypocrisy’ In Craig Scandal

Earlier this month, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) pleaded guilty to “misdemeanor disorderly conduct” for “lewd” sexual conduct in a men’s public restroom. In July, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) also admitted to the “sin” of a sexual crime — frequenting an escort service run by the DC Madam.

To date, five Republican lawmakers have called on Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) to resign:

Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN): “Senator Craig pled guilty to a crime involving conduct unbecoming a senator. He should resign.”

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ): “I believe that he — that he pled guilty and he had the opportunity to plead innocent. So I think he should resign.”

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI): “However, he also represents the Republican Party, and I believe that he should step down as his conduct throughout this matter has been inappropriate for a U.S. senator.”

Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN): “While additional concerns are being raised, Senator Craig already demonstrated that he is unfit to serve in the U.S. Congress when he pled guilty. I believe that he needs to step down.”

Reps. Jeff Miller (R-FL), Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL), Bobby Jindal (R-LA), and Ron Lewis (R-KY): [A handful of Republicans] urged Craig to step down…including Jeff Miller and Ginny Brown-Waite of Florida, Mark Souder of Indiana, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Ron Lewis of Kentucky.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has also stripped Craig of his committee leadership positions and called for a Senate ethics investigation into the affair.

In contrast, none of these nine lawmakers reprimanded Vitter after he admitted to soliciting a prostitute. He even received “‘thunderous applause‘ from Senate GOP colleagues during a policy lunch held a few days after his admission.”

One Republican senator is involved in soliciting sex from a man and the Republican leadership calls for a Senate investigation and yanks the rug from underneath him. Another Republican senator admits to soliciting the services of a female prostitute and there’s not only no investigation but the senator is greeted with a standing ovation by his Republican peers.

What explains the starkly different responses?
I’d say rank and homophobic hypocrisy.

The Republicans are afraid they may appear to be soft on gays. or hard for them.

When Vitter was outed as a heterosexual, he did not stand up and claim, "I'm not straight" as a defense. Instead, he quietly told all his brother Senators, "My wife spends too much time in Louisiana."

The all nodded silently and understood.

When Senator Craig's problems came to light, it suddenly occured to them, they had seen secret homosexual footwork in the Senate men's room and not realised it. At that time, only the man who ran the shoe shine stand knew for sure who it was in the next stall, doing the one footed tea for two routine.

Hey, it is possible that Senator Craig received an invitation to be on "Dancing with the Stars", and figured, while he was taking a dump, he might as well practice a few steps. You know how our elected officials are, they don't like to waste government time and all.

That would have been a possible way out, but for two things:

a. he didn't think of it at the time

b. he didn't flush the toilet before he left the stall

Was Vitter charged and convicted or pled guilty to a crime as of yet? That may be the "official" reasoning behind the differences.

Hell, look at the Dems, that Jefferson character was found with 100k in his freezer and it took them ages to even request that he step down from his positions.

There are a couple of things about this I don't get.

1. If you're a public figure who knows that there are people out there who will grab anything they can to bring you down, why be that stupid in public?

2. Why do people see public restrooms as a good place for sex? They're nasty: especially mens' rooms. I'm all about clean sheets, soft grass or even some fine Corinthian leather, not urine-soaked stalls.

Those notwithstanding, hypocrisy sucks. Have the guts to be consistent between your actions, your beliefs and what comes out of your mouth.

Solicitation is illegal in nearly every state. Vitter admitted using the D.C. Madam's escort services. She is charged with running a prostitution ring, he is guilty by association and by his own admission.

Senate Republicans should have called for Vitter to step down just as they have with Craig. The fact that they not only did not ask Vitter to resign, but met him with raucous applause upon his return to the Senate Chambers then calling vehemently for Craig to step down speaks volumes about the GOP's hypocrisy.

So far as William Jefferson goes, they man was indicted in June of this year, he was actually asked to resign his committee positions before the indictment was even handed down, he refused and on Jun 15 (11 days after his indictment) he was removed from them by vote. I don't see 11 days as "ages".

Maybe he's a gay who doesn't think gays should be allowed to marry and other various things? Ever think of that! :p

Okay, I'll add on or over the washer & dryer to that list but a girl has to have some standards.

Speaking of David Vitters he brought shame to his colleagues for cavorting with the opposite gender! As one Senator in the Grand Old Party put it, "Girls? Ewwwwwwww...ick."

Sen. Craig - who has done nothing more than get caught with poor restroom etiquette - still has the respect of his peers.

You know that there is no such thing as "Fine Corinthian Leather" right?

Chrysler's "Corinthian" leather was mass produced in a plant in Newark, New Jersey.

This was a conflict of what came out of his mouth and what goes in it.

I reckon it's a possibility.

Ducking and hiding from the press is like taking off at a run near a potentially mean dog. It gets their carnivorous instincts up.

Once again, has Vitter been indicted or pled guilty to the crime? I'm pretty sure that in most cases the person has to be charged with or plead to a crime before proceedings to remove them can be given.

And honestly, where is the hypocrisy? The Repubs are well known for dealing harshly with homosexuals.

But it was another Madison Avenue success since we both remember the reference. I like hearing Ricardo roll those syllables off in my mind.

The hypocrisy is easy to see.

Vitter had extramarital sex with a prostitute, he admitted as much. Solicitation is a crime. He was met with a round of applause upon his return to the Senate Chambers.

Craig tried to have extramarital sex with another man, unsuccessfully. He was charged with a misdemeanor (peeping and disorderly conduct) He's been vilified by his fellow Republicans.

The point is that both of these gentlemen broke the law, both should have been treated the same by their peers. But because Craig's offense was of a homosexual nature he's treated as a pariah while Vitter gets a standing ovation.

That my friend, is hypocrisy.

Vitter tried helping a woman in her chosen line of work, as REPOZ try to do

Had he been a DemonDUM, he woulda given her a handout!

Make her chosen line of work legal and we have no problem. Otherwise, supporting the "work ethic" of a prostitute is still illegal.

Vitter and Craig should both be removed, they have both displayed a lack of respect for the laws that they are elected to create.
