Nicole Mason (mayor's daughter)
Age: 24

*******************
4 weeks earlier

The Mayor's Ball.

It was an annual tradition that the city of New Port looked forward to every year. This was the first time Nicole would be attending seeing as how it was her father's first term as mayor.

A lot of people attended. Including those from the local police force and even some from the neighboring AF base.

To say she was a little nervous was an understatement for Nicole. She had been away for most of her father's campaign and this would be her first 'coming' out as it was. But what could go wrong, all she had to do was show up in a nice dress, say hello to a few people and then, smile and go home.

That was it.

Right?

*****************************************
Present

Yeah, that had been the plan. Nicole thought as she knelt over the toilet, dry heaving and trying to take deep breaths to calm her system down.

No, that night was a night that was going to change her life in ways she never thought possible.

And was bad? No. No it wasn't. The bad part was that the guy she ended up going home with was someone she had just met and someone she didn't bother to get his first name.

One thing she knew was that he was a cop. At least she figured he was. He had a gun...

And the way he fucked her that night. The way he used her so hard, Nicole didn't think that sort of pleasure existed. It seemed kind of corny to explain it that way but that's how it felt.

She was sure she'd never see him again and she was OK with that. But now... now what?

I tugged at my collar again. I knew I looked good in my tuxedo, but that didn't make me like wearing it any better. Still, I couldn't afford to fiddle with it; I'd never get the bow tie redone to the same standard.

I cast a glance towards the guest of honor. If Mayor Mason minded the formal dress code, he hardly seemed to show it. He stood amongst a coalition of the city's elite guffawing over someone's witticism. If I judged his audience correctly, the humor was likely crude and offensive. No doubt they'd climb atop their high horses to condemn such offensive jokes were they uttered by some Hollywood entertainer, but behind closed doors they found it hilarious.

Still, I was not here to judge. Such types had access to levers of wealth and power. That made them of interest to my employer.

I'd already served my purpose tonight. The five term Senator was cautious - an attribute my employer respected - so direct communication was hardly possible. The Senator's constituency included few Asians, so our shared presence would ordinarily seem out of place. However, the Mayor's Ball was a vast melting pot of ethnicities and interests. The chaos of the hundreds of guests mingling about the ballroom provided the perfect camouflage for a quick meeting with the Senator.

He'd taken his instruction well. His ebony face had frowned only briefly before he'd recovered. His trademark grin with the bright teeth shone wide, perfectly disguising the disdain in his eyes. I knew better than to take offense; men like the Senator did not like being reminded that my employer pulled their strings.

I considered leaving now that my task was completed. However, it was an open bar and the Mayor did have good taste. I might as well take advantage of his largesse.

~~~~~~
His voice always sounded dry - like old parchment. "Number 5. I have a task for you."
"How may I serve, Master?"
"Meet me for tea. I want you to visit a friend in the city to the east. You will convey a message for me." Despite the unlikelihood of eavesdroppers, the Mountain Master never spoke openly on the phone. His true instruction would be given only in person.
"I will be there."
The line clicked shut, so I hung up. The Mountain Master did not like phones.
The city to the east. I hadn't been back there in months. Not since. . . the Mayor's Ball.
I smiled. Not since the redhead.
I'd had many women in my time, but she stood out in memory. Admittedly, I'd seen few who could match her physically. But the way she had unreservedly given herself to me that night - that was unique.
I'd never expected to see her again. Two ships passed in the night, never to cross paths again. Perhaps I was wrong.
"You're running late again Nicole!" This wasn't good for someone in my position. Especially being the mayor's daughter and everyone thinking that I got the job because of who my father was. I thought I had worked hard enough to prove that wasn't the case. But hell, they were set in their ways. So I mostly ignored the others and did my job.
My job being one of the head editors for the city's paper.
After this morning's little 'show' I put on in the bathroom at my apartment, I had a hard time getting ready with a queasy stomach threatening to halt my usual morning routine.
God, how was I going to explain this one to my father? Hey Dad, you threw a party a couple of weeks ago and I got pregnant because of it...thanks!
If it wasn't that bad, then I could only imagine over time the people at work and how the rumor mill was both at work and of course, politically.
Oh well. I would figure it out. I always did. I could do this. Even though it was going to be a major change in my life, I knew I could do this.
"I can do this." I muttered as I waited in line for my coffee. It didn't matter if I was late or not. I needed my morning caffeine fix before work. And damn, would I need it today. I could just tell.
The tea with the Mountain Master was brief. He was not a man given to sentiment towards his subordinates. We were tools that served the organization and were handsomely rewarded for it.
"You know this man." His voice was quiet but firm. His 80+ years left him wrinkled and withered, but the iron will that drove him remained unbending. He slid a photograph across the table.
I glanced at it. "Yes. The new mayor. Mason. I attended his inaugural ball."
The Master nodded. He knew all these things already. "He belongs to us, though he doesn't know it."
He slid across another photo. "Anthony Luciano. Mason's Chief of Staff. He approached us for assistance during the election. We provided it. Mason won." He shrugged - what else need be said?
The Master's eyes narrowed. "Now he tries to avoid us. He does not wish to remember the debt he owes. You will remind him of his duty."
I set down the teacup and rose from the table. "Yes, Mountain Master."
He nodded. The meeting was over. I departed.
~~~~~~~
I arrived in the city two days later. I spent a few days preparing and planning. Most of this would prove unnecessary if Luciano was smart and did as he was told. But I had not achieved my reputation by leaving matters to chance.

My next step would be to meet Luciano. A light rain was falling. I put on my hat and coat, then headed to the mayor's office.
