Women's NCAA World Series Softball, back to back Championships!

I never cared much for girl's or women's sports until I had to cover them for a newspaper and then do play by play for a radio station.

Girls seem to have so much fun, laughing, jumping up and down, shedding tears, hugging each other.

Amazing to me, pitchers for both Arizona and Tennessee, pitched every inning, every pitch in eight full games, over a thousand pitches for one.

The Arizona Pitcher, Mowatt, pitched eight complete games in seven days, every pitch of the entire competition, never heard of just one person doing that, thought it was illegal or something.

Anyway, was an enjoyable pass time for the past week or so, watching all the games, had pretty much given up on Arizona as they lost several days ago and were on the verge of being eliminated in each of the last five games...

wonder if anyone else watched?

Random weirdness for Ami

Crazy! I was just watching those on ESPN2 while searching for French Open coverage.

I had the following thoughts:

1) Just how much do those windmill pitches hurt and do they feel silly when they're doing them?

2) My gawd, those girls are pretty. They're like every guy's wet dream or something.
They're down and dirty with the baseball and yet are completely feminine.
I am truly in awe.

Oh yeah, and they play well, too. :D

Hello again, Bluebell...yes it is rather amazing...not only that, they are scholars also, not like the usual run of college athletes, some are 4.0 students.

And, later this summer many will try out for the US National Team and from there, hope to be selected for the US Olympics Team for Beijing, next year.

I enjoyed it, had some small hopes others had followed the series also, but I guess not...

Softball

I, too, enjoyed the women's softball championship tournament, though I felt sad for Monica Abbott. There are some athletic contests where ya hate to see anybody lose (the Cornell-Albany NCAA men's lacrosse semi-final game being another case in point).

I'm an old baseball player who's always enjoyed purely "for fun" disorganized softball (it's always a perfect excuse for giving grief to, and having a few beers with, the b'hoys.

In any event, I'm sure glad I don't have to face pitching like THAT. Yikes!

Hi, Trisail, thanks, yes I thought Monica Abbot was going to blow through the Wildcats and give Tennessee their first ever championship and the camera kept going back to the face of one of the Volunteer girls, light blue eyes brimming with tears when they lost.

Know all about 'tri-sails' or, I called it a 'storm sail' when I got caught in a blow in the Bahama's and my working jib blew out.

regards...

I was at a sports bar to watch Game 5 of the Stanley Cup and see the Ducks win the big one. The softball championship game was on another TV, so I watched it occasionally.

Observations:
Fast pitch softball still looks bizzarre to me. I'm not sure why the women still play softball.

A huge percentage of the Arizona and Tennessee women are either "cute", "pretty" or downright "hot". Female athletes are pretty much awesome, especially those in sports where a normal, medium build is ideal (as opposed to the women-children of gymnastics, 5% bodyfat distance runners, or overmuscled, broad shouldered swimmers.)

I agree that the teams' excitement rivaled that of those in the NCAA basketball tourney, men or women. In some ways women's college sports has become what men's were 20 years ago, a much more "pure" game, that was more about "love of the game" than advertisements and a stepping stone for the pros.

Good question, JamesSD, as to why women still play softball rather than baseball, and I have no answer but I hope they continue to play the game...
