Congratulations to Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, the first woman to be nominated to 4-stars in any military branch.

Bush nominates Lt. Gen Dunwoody

For those of you unfamiliar with the military, 4 stars is currently the highest rank one can receive whilst serving. [and for those of you that ask about 5-stars, they are only awarded under wartime conditions, IE WWII].
She has served for 33 years, having enlisted as a second lieutenant in 1975. She holds 2 graduate degrees and has been awarded such metals as the Distinguished Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
There are currently 57 women serving as 1+ stars, 5 of whom are 3 stars

Congratulations on the nomination! :rose:

The Senate has to approve this, I read. Hopefully that'll be a sure thing.

Very cool. It's always good to see our military stepping up and doing the right thing.

1) Congratulations to the General.

2) To award five stars, what kind of war will we need?

If memory serves correctly the last 5-stars we had were from WWII...couple offhand would be Adm Nimitz, Adm Halsey, Gen Eisenhower, and Gen MacArthur

There will never (barring invasion from space) again be a war large enough to warrant the giving of 5-star rank. It would require a global conflict on the order of WWII and if one of those ever breaks out, prepare to be harvesting mushrooms. Additionally, there isn't anyone out there with the capacity to be a serious enough threat to pose a war that big. No, China isn't even close and don't bore me with your "yellow peril" fantasies, thank-you, I am/was a member of the intelligence community and the journalistic paranoia is completely unimpressing. Fuggedaboudit.

Will any of the AH locals dare to praise Bush for recognizing her? Stay tuned, my friends; same bat-time, same bat-channel!!

Besides, once they hit LA I predict a massive peace treaty admist the gangs of LA to rise up against the Chinese and hit them with a rather nasty surprise -chuckles-

-chuckles- Eh he's done a few things right, I'll give him that. And if he signs bill S22 :D I'll say he went out decently enough

Got to hand it to Bush - this goes a long way to make up for the war and the economy and stuff.

I thought that was essentially what posters were doing on this thread. (Beyond congratulating her own work to rise to this position.) I don't remember seeing anyone suggest here that the Bush administration wasn't fair to women in government. Is there a discussion on that you can point to?

One that the planet would never recover from, given the power of modern weaponry. Imagine WWII with today's jets, tanks and nukes. No, it wouldn't be worth it.

I don't think it would require that. A connecting of the the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and spreading down into Africa might be enough to cause a war of the necessary magnitude. Conventional warfare would be enough in that senario.

in answer to question number 2

a war is only a war that congress actually voted and said... we are at war... meaning that the Vietnam "conflict" as well as the Korean "conflict" and as well as the mess we are in and have been since Desert Storm are not wars

Korea was classified as a war in retrospect--to get the veterans covered by benefits. By the time Vietnam came around, they changed the benefit laws, so they didn't have to classify it as a war.
