Trying to determine the difference between Erotica and Porn.

Is it truly a difference in the content of a story, or more an issue of the readers concept?

ie: Billy rammed his hard cock deep into her swollen wet cunt.

is this a line from erotica or a statement one would read in porn?

My opinon it would be porn. I think erotica needs to play more on the reader's imagination, and use descriptions and images to guide where the reader's thoughts go. Erotica should draw the reader into the story, make them feel apart of it. While Porn is more voyeuristic. The reader is just a viewer of the story and its activities.

Any comments?

Don't get me wrong here. I enjoy both, it just depends on my mood. :)

Another great debate

Datadr--

I've listened to a few interesting discussions on this debate. Hell, someone even asked to quote me on mine once. Damn, where did I put it. LOL

For me, good erotica employees everything we expect from quality literature--solid content, good pacing, tone, appeal and believable characters, craftsmanship.

Erotica doesn't rely on explicit sex to be sexually arousing. It must be sensual. There is normally greater tension and plot development. The language is creative whether it is straightforward or esoteric. Erotica stimulates our intellects.

I've read funny, shorter erotic pieces. I'd argue they're still not porn because of how they're written. They're stories where sex isn't the only appeal.

Porn is sexually explicit intended to arouse, peak and explode. Quicker the better. No thinking required. Nothing wrong with taking a mental break. When I pull out my favorite plastic, I grab a video. Can't read and manuever at the same time. :D

I want more than body parts, predictable scenes and over-dependence on words like 'fuck', 'cock', 'cum', 'oh, baby make me scream'. ICK. Why not just rent the dime a dozen video if you simply want to jack off? When I read, I want it knocked up a notch. Doesn't have to be scholarly, but I want more than what I can pull off any rack.

There is a fine line between the two, I'll admit. But Erotica needs strong literary basis to stand on. It's not just about "the act" --- two random people having sex. Erotica is more about the development of characters and getting to know the personalities, both their quirks and their flaws.

Subtleties and flirting lead to encounters that could only be properly imagined if you have a firm background of the characters involved. Erotica gives you a chance to explore the emotional intimacies as well as the physical effects which is lifeblood of Porn. Erotica relies on metaphors and allusions, presenting a 'softer' image through details rather than giving you the entire picture in living color.

Ahhh, dontcha love a good discussion...

huh

Mj--

Erotica does not include explicit sex? :( No carnal action in erotica?

Explicit & carnal...definitely...and in most cases, the main focus.

But in Erotica there are other elements that allow the reader to become wrapped up the world, if only for a moment, instead of merely being a voyeur.

Although everybody needs to be a voyeur every now & then ;)

Like daughter, I think that erotica is more than porn. It's sort of like fast food versus haute cuisine.

I think that you could probably take any porn story and turn it into erotica. Add character development, plot, pacing, etc. and voila.

I think like porn, erotica can be voyueristic. For him that glips of stocking top as she gets into the car, for her that bulge at thighs juncture. Or the feel of hard muscle beneath shirt. The diference is that erotica appeals to and involves all of the senses.
It must be slow to build, draw in the viewer/reader, so that they can empathise/exchange places with the participants in the drama being set before them. Erotica can and to a degree must include porn, that raw edge that gets you going. But this must not detract from that promise of more.

Always leave your audience wanting more.

Erotica vs. porn

You touched one of my hot buttons here. (See my sig. line.)
To me, erotica is any writing which intends to arouse
erotic feelings.
"Pornography" is a label which people apply to erotica
of which they disapprove.<P>
Some people in the field try to apply the term "porn"
to what they produce, but that's like the Black teens who
call each other "nigger." It's an attempt to kill the
natural negative qualities of the term.

Erotica VS. Porn

There is such a huge difference between porn and erotica. Anyone who is anti-porn will say that erotica is porn. But in my view erotica is in a world and a class of its own. We all seem to have established that porn is a quick fix when you are horny and need quick gratification. Erotica is so different. Erotica takes the reader to a new and higher level. When I write my erotica my stories tend to be a little on the long side. Simply because I use a lot of detail. I use the detail so my readers can feel as if THEY are actually a character in the story. Erotica is an escape from every day problems for the readers. They get lost in the story and pretend that they are in a fantasy world living for real.

Erotica is so much deeper than porn. If you feel like you are IN THE STORY then that means that it is something important to you. Orgasms experienced from reading erotica tend to be stronger. There is a longer build up time in which the readers body gets turned on more than just from looking at porn or reading a penthouse story. The feedback I get from my stories tells me that I am giving my readers what they want. I constantly hear how well developed and how well written my stories flow. That is also an important part of erotica. If you have any questions feel free to reply to me.

To me erotica is making love - porn is fucking.

Making love is a whole relational loving experience.
Fucking is pure sex, unadulterated.

Making love usually includes fucking.

Usually I prefer making love.
Sometimes I want Jimmy to just fuck me!

Here's how I differentiate the two. Porn appeals directly to the privates, erotica to the mind. They say that writers often have an "ideal reader" in mind when they write a story. A porn writer would have an 18-year-old guy with his pants down and a bottle of lotion. An erotica writer would have a woman in a silk robe lying on a satin-sheeted bed surrounded by dozens of candles. I oversimplify, but I think it shows the distinction between the two.

A few of my stories are strictly porn, a few are erotica, and a few are a bit of both. Nothing wrong with writing porn, if that's what you want to do.

erotica--Literature or art intended to arouse sexual desire, from the Greek erotikos, sexual love.

pornography--sexually explicit material that sometimes equates sex with power and violence, from the Greek pornographos, porne+graphos, to write about prostitutes.

Let's see; the Supremes, that cross dressing nonet, declared pornography to be that which aroused prurient interest.

Now we know the difference. All erotica is pornographic, but some pornography is not. So, if I write erotica that somehow doesn't arouse, it is not pornographic, but it might still be pornography. Huh?

Erotica at its finest

In my opinion (not so humble), the greatest fucking erotic work ever written was "Lady Chatterly's Lover," by D.H. Lawrence. The description near the end of anal intercourse, especially, is a textbook example of how to write classy erotica as opposed to cheap porn. Of course, not everyone can write as well as Lawrence-- but the basic idea is to focus on the feelings of the characters rather than a "blow by blow" description of the sexual acts.

I always just use a simple little divider to see if it's porn or erotica.
If they describe the penis as a dick or a cock, it's porn. If they describe it as manhood, it's erotica.
If they describe the vagina as pussy or cunt, it's porn. If they describe it as just inside... or v, or something else, it's erotica.

Works for me

Less confusion more desire vs. fantasy

After having ben a frequent visitor to this wee site for about a year, I occasionally ask myself (shortly after the 'phone bill), Why?

The counselling I've had, some questions have been answered, yet sometimes we should also ask why; by professing to have desire that either a partner (fictionary or otherwise) will not provide gives us all legitimacy. Yet we assume to need moral justification for what turns us on.

Taboo has long been associated with "purient interest", however, would that be consistent with living? Perhaps not.

One very pleasant thing with fantasy, is that, no matter what happens, it's in yer mind. Those that either through opportunity or lack of stimulus will find a way to experience; yet I'd say that most would prefer to live somethings within the comfort of theri own imagination.

My moniker may suggest: sensual living is, as I'd like to think that I'd like prefer to to excel, (practice permitting,of course..).

Porn to erotica..hard to soft drugs....it's all in the defintion and what it will do for you...[ Without the handy burden of what it will do to you if reality is yer reason].

First post on this fine site, am slightly toasty due to the night,
Cheers, Rab.
