Confidentiality on Lit

Over the past couple of months it has come to my attention that there seems to be a serious lack of confidentiality here on Lit. I don't know about anyone else here but I know that I value my privacy here and respect everyone elses privacy as well, but lately I have been made aware of ALOT of instances in which Yahoo conversations are being archived then being copied and sent to other people without their knowledge, which is causing alot of problems between people.

I don't know how this can be changed...and really...I don't think that it can. I know that I use Yahoo / MSN as a form of communication with quite a few people and would be lost without it. Maybe we all just need a reminder here that trust in a relationship is very important. I know myself that I would not appreciate my conversations being copied and pasted and sent around to other people and hopefully the people that I'm talking to would think the same way.

Not to sure if I'm really looking for responses to this persay...but maybe someone would have some suggestions as to how do you really know when you can trust someone enough to say things that you would hope wouldn't get sent around to someone else.

Hopefully I've made some kind of sense here ... but my main point being ... be careful what you say cause it sure as hell can be copied and pasted and sent on to someone else...and odds are it's not being done for a good purpose.

Edit to add...this kind of thing hasn't had any ill effects on me but has on people I know in general...so just a nudge to remind people to be a bit more careful.

Hi Princess .... I don't see there's a lot you can do about it, apart from appeal to everyone to respect your privacy. I am, like you, keen to keep my privacy on Lit, and I only disclose personal details to people who I have known for a while and seem, in my judgement, to be decent human beings who will respect your views and keep any conversations that take place between you as strictly private ... you can't legislate for people lacking in morals or manners ....

Here is one thing that I have learned and I don't know if applies to the latest versions of yahoo im or not. If one doesn't have their yahoo im set to archive ims then the other person will only get one side of the conversation if they do have their im set to archive.

I know what you mean Yes and Ipersonally have had something very similar happen to me and iit is a violation of trust. What can be done about it as far as Lit it's self goes, I don't think anything. As far as people go, if someone attempts to send you a paste and copy im conversation that they had with someone else, just remember that it could be your conversation that they are sending to someone else next.

Hi Yes Yes Yes,

totally agree, both with the fact people should respect privacy and there's probably nothing you an do if they don't.

However, my private discussions ALWAYS stay private ;)

I do likewise myself...I don't let alot of people in on any details of my personal life till I feel I can trust them also. I know there is nothing that can be done and I'm really thankful that the above hasn't happened to me (knock on wood) but so many people have been telling me horror stories of it lately that I just thought I'd bring it up to give people a little reminder. Like I said...so far I've been very lucky in who I choose as friends and do respect every aspect of their privacy...I guess what you give you receive.

That's very interesting Meds about saving the conversations...personally I've never felt the need to save any of my conversations. If it's important enough that I need to remember it...then I'm talking to you on the phone...which means I trust you totally and completely.

When I was told about this happening to other people I thought the same thing and it really has caused me to totally stop talking to some people via IM...sorry...but if your sending me conversations then I can't trust that you will keep mine private...end of that relationship.

Yep...your right...nothing that can be done...kind of just made this post as a little kick in the butt to people that people privacy does matter here. I'm sure most people do keep their conversations private...but there are those select few that choose not to  for whatever their reasons may be.

I have mine set to archive for business reasons and because I also use yahoo im to help coordinate some class things that go on occasionally. That is how I found out about what it does and doesn't save. My memory just isn't what it used to be.

I too, usually end up on the phone with the people that I really trust.

I so hear you about having to find your memory before you can refresh it....I do that alot these days. Look for my memory that is. You are most welcome any time.

Relationships on LIT are just like all relationships!
Trust, and every other aspect of a relationship, take time to acquire.
Although, its terrible when someone violates your trust, it is also fantastic to
be able to trust someone. Then, you can use one of those special words,
FRIEND!

Only one person (my Master), knows all about me. I haven't heard of this happening but think it's very sad. Sounds like childish behavior.

I agree Oman they are like any other relationship and I'm very thankful that I can honetly say I have made some life long friendships here weather they be people I have met in person or people that I have talked to for the past two years, and yes, you can become good friends just thru IM's PM's and phone calls and it's been proven to me over and over.

I mainly started this thread as a little nudge and reminder to people that you are "talking" to a real person behind that screen and to think about what your doing and saying. I personally haven't been hurt by anyone doing this but I do know of people that have...and it just "ain't" right!

Say hi to your sweet lady for me :)

Childish is a very good way of putting it.

Thank you Darlin!! How sweet you are! It did definately suck!! And thats the question I have...what purpose does it serve than to show the person you're sending the private stuff too, your ignorance!! People who do this don't understand it just makes THEM look bad!!

Thank you sweetie, and I don't think it will ever happen again cuz I won't allow it to!! Ya know what they say..."Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on ME!!".

Well he is a bit on the short side, usually 3 feet tall but occasionally 4 feet. I really think that's the problem, he keeps changing height, his being a 350 pound dwarf is nothing compared to that.
