I apologize if this has already been discussed, but as a new erotica writer I would love to hear your take on the issue of birth control in stories. Do you mention condoms in your stories? Or do you leave it out?
I hadn't mentioned it, but don't want to be considered irresponsible by my readers.
Thoughts?
Thanks
SJ

I haven't used them and I've only had one reader call me on it. :) If I were writing a different kind of stroke, I would probably put a condom in there, but given the confines of my stuff, I haven't yet.

Some readers will bomb you for it and some will bomb you without them...just seems to be the nature of the beast.

Luck,

Yui

In all honesty, I never even think about it until someone mentions it like this. To me my scenes are love scenes, not sex scenes. I know that sounds old and steriotypical, but that's how I feel. Feeling that way my two characters are intimate and close. Therefore, no need for a condom. Now, I know the question is kinda geared towards a pregnancy bend. My answer to that...

It's a short stroy. Far too short for nine months to span and have a baby. Next repsonse, it's a break from reality. Reality has screaming kids. NO screaming kids in my stories. Okay. That's how I feel.

Just when are we going to see more of your um.....content?

I probably would if it seemed appropriate to my story. I know I've read stories where the man has put on a condom and didn't feel that it broke the story at all. It was just realism. I think it's all in how it's handled.

When Carson and Rhys were writing their on-going saga here in the AH (those were the days, god I miss that!) they always used condoms and did it effectively. Search for the threads called "Oh Carson" and "The Best Place For Sex Toys" for examples! And be ready for the hottest M/M sex scenes ever! (Truly, even if you don't like M/M sex, it will leave you breathless.)

Yes I have. It seemed appropriate. It was the characters first time together and he wanted show she could trust him. And it was gesture of love. He wanted to demonstrate that her health and well being was more important than his pleasure.

Only in the one story though.

People are still gonna kill me for this, but those thread made me laugh my ass off. I just couldn't help but picture the backstage fighting couple. That was mainly attributed to the brief banter amongst the well written story.

That and we have a couple who frequent my pharmacy store that Carson an Rhys reminded me of.

One of the men had just had some sort of surgery, so the other had to take care of all of the prescription needs.

The non-surgery one, keeping names confidential of course, came in and I asked how the other was doing.

He said, "Oh, he just won't quit whinning. He doesn't do the dishes and he leaves his trash everywhere..."

He went on and on for about five mintues and I almost lost it. That's how I pictured Carson and Rhys. Absolutely hilarious.

*Bah!* Hardly. You sir are a gentle man. And gay. As in the dictionary form and being happy and without worry.

I would spend many a happy night in your company as opposed to the best night possible in his.

Edited to say: That's supposed to be comforting. I guess that's why men don't do this thing very often. Let me try a more traditional approach.

Hey. Listen here man. *cracks open a cold one* You da man!

I don't buy that.

Honestly, while Rhys is one sexy beast, I was always rooting for you, Carson. You were both so raw but the internal struggle that you wrote about won me over. I could see myself being you in that story line (minus the cock, of course) falling for the bad boy, always wanting more.

Oh, the whole thing was intensely intoxicating. OK, I'm in the middle of reading that other thing. Back soon!

Being the underdog everyone is rooting for... hmmm, guess I can deal with that. Wouldn't mind being a sexy beast though.... :D

I'm afraid the only sexy beast is the one being cuddled on the couch. ;)

Well by all means, c'mon over here. You know outta the way and all. Closer...c'mon a litle closer....

You know, we're rather good at this whole jacking thing. Thread jacking that is. ;)

I'm in a really rotten mood tonight.

To my it depends on the development of your characters. Does your characters choose condoms? Why? If it's not important to the story, leave it out? Are the condoms an issue with the character?

What I like is have a new lover with the skills to suck or blow a condom on my cock before sex. Some are better at it than others, but I thought it was the coolest thing the first time a girl did that.

No no no! I'm not making sense and I'm not even ovulating!

I never thought of you as the underdog! Not ever. But I rooted for your character because he was so open and so amazingly hot.

And I think you're incredibly sexy.

So sorry about the threadjack, by the way!

A lot of guys say they don't use condoms because putting one on breaks the mood. In writing, it's even more of a flow breaker in many cases. Like characters using the bathroom or changeing underware, most people who write, tend to ignore that kind of minutae in their works because it dosen't add to the plot.

In a certain kind of story, a girl insisting on the use of a condom can advance plot. Likewise, in certain situations, a guy using one can advance his character developement. The real answer is using them in stories is appropriate only if the story or characters demand it.

There is really no hard and fast rule. Within the context of a stroy, the use or non use, should be dictated by situation , plot & character development.

I didn't know that you could become pregnant from a story...

Actually, my concern in asking about condoms was in preventing STD's (guess that wasn't clear, since I referred to it as birth control.) My stories are tending to involve strangers having sex, so they obvioulsy don't know histories, etc. I didn't know if it was common to include condom use in these kinds of stories or not.
Thanks for all the feedback!
