Trump's best friend, idol, and mentor, Roy Cohn, was an overt racist, and one of the most infamous bigots of the 20th Century.
His other self-admitted idol, William Levitt, not only refused to sell his homes to African Americans and other minorities, but worked to stop the resale of housing to them as well.

Was, Lovecraft. Not is. Besides, I believe the comment you're referring to was in opposition to busing programs, which although arguably racist, is not quite the same as supporting segregation.
As for Robert Byrd, he spent the last 40 years of his life apologizing for his past. I can see why that sort of thing wouldn't register with a Trump supporter, though.
