For those who haven't been keeping track, towards the end of May Qatar, that small, Islamic country on the Arabian peninsula which the U.S. uses as a launching pad for air strikes and surveillance in the region, made statements which appeared to indicate it was warming to relations with Iran AND Israel. The Qataris even questioned if the con artist would last.
These comments set off the con artist who, not wanting to have an Islamic country be friendly with Israel, tweeted what a horrible deal this was. This in turn led the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations to sever diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar.
The con artist even rejoiced tweeting, "So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off." "They said they would take a hard line on funding extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!"
In his rush to pat his own back, since Melania won't go near it, the con artist apparently had another amnesia episode because Saudi Arabia is where 17 of the 19 9/11 hijackers came from, not to mention Saudi Arabia is the main backer of wahabism, a puritanical version of Islam with ties to terrorism. The Saudis finance the building of mosques and schools which preach only this hardline version of Islam.
After all this has been said, it turns out Qatar never made any such announcement. Not officially. With help from experts at the FBI and other U.S. security agencies, it now appears Russian hackers were able to infiltrate the official Qatari news media and plant the fake story.
US officials say the Russian goal appears to be to cause rifts among the US and its allies. In recent months, suspected Russian cyber activities, including the use of fake news stories, have turned up amid elections in France, Germany and other countries.
The con artist, when confronted by news his presidential backers may behind this fake news story, declined to comment other than to say he had to meet with some Russian officials at an undisclosed location.
So remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
