My piece of crap computer is about to bite the dust. I'm considering a new Gateway. Anyone out there have any opinions pro or con about Gateway?:)

The only thing I didn't like about Gateway is that if you bought any addons (operating system upgrades, drives, memory, etc) from anyone OTHER than GAteway you invalidated your warranty, and customer service would not help you troubleshoot.

Dell had a better customer service policy

My Gateway almost 4 years old, never had to have it serviced or repaired.

;) :p

Thanks.
I'll add that to my list of questions to ask at the Cow Barn. :)

Gateways are pretty decent. There's nothing wrong either with a generic, no name PC from a reputable shop. You'll get exactly what you want and without all the fluffy software.

Hi LRC it's nice to see you.

Hiiiiiiii Shy.......... I haven't seen you around here in a long time. Good to see you, too.:)

I agree with Zam..

The thing that I don't like about Gateway is that you do not get the operating system CD... and if your system completely crashes... you're fucked, unless you have them come fix it, which is okay until the warranty runs out.. a generic custom built computer has all the of the same good quality components inside... so they are just as good and most shops will back their machines just as well as Gateway... you may not get the frilly outside package, but you will have a damn good computer for most likely less cost too... ;)

Personally; I had problems with the Dell customer service people... which is why I own a gateway. But *everybody* keeps saying that Dells CS is better; I don't see it.

Yet another question to ask the cow man. Thanks. I swear when I walked in the place I expected the salesman to be dressed in overalls and chewing on a piece of straw. :D

hhmm.. maybe they changed

well Gateway, may have changed their policy.. my father bought his from Gateway last year, and they didn't give him the windows cd... just a crash recovery... his whole system crashed, and the restore disk was useless... might as well wiped my ass with it.. He ended up taking the machine to the Gateway store 50 miles away and leaving it so they could reload everything.... I couldn't touch it or it would have voided the warranty, even though I am A+ certified.. sorry but I won't own a Gateway or a fucking Dell... their customer service is supposed to be so good... I heard at least.. I waited over an hour on the phone, just to fix my online order... by the time I finally got through, I told them to shove that computer up their ass.... I went back to custom ordering from a local shop....

Well, being a computer dummy ( no comments from the eucalyptus tree:D ) I like the idea that if I completely screw the thing up I can dump it there for them to fix it.

gateway sucks ass , take it from a bonofied computer geek

not only do you over pay but u get a pc that u cant upgrade or do anything with

gateways are prepackaged deals , not very modular

the better way to go is to find yourself a smaller private owned computer store and get them to sit down and work out what you want and what u need from your computer and they will put it together for you , of course it helps to have a computer geek like myself present so u dont pay for a fancy name or sumthing u really dont need

as far as the support thing goes , well truth be told computer arent really that hard to fix , get your self a A+ certification book and you can do it all yourself

That is my main issue with Gateways; I haven't opened one in a couple of years, but every time I have in the past ten years it was just a real pain to add anything or get to anything. Same goes for Compaq (although it has been even longer since I opened one of their systems).

It was like whoever designed their systems intentionally made it hard to add memory or drives, etc. - I really like Dell in that regard; their systems are increasingly nice to work on. Now most people never have to open up their systems, and for them I suppose the Gateway might be okay, but I still recommend Dell if you are going for a major brand. As for Customer Service - I never had problems with any of them, but I have rarely had to deal with CS.

If you can find one that is highly recommended then you can maybe save a few hundred and get just what you want, but it is hit and miss, and private computer stores come and go.

I usually only recommend this route for people who already know what they want and what they are getting; i.e., people who know an Asus MB from and Intel MB, and why they would want one over the other. Otherwise, you may walk into a computer store that sets you up with whatever they can slap together, or you could luck out and get somebody that is really good.

It is just a crap shoot unless they come recommended from someone who has a lot of experience with them (say like a computer support person at your company who has bought 50 computers from them - and if that is the case, it doesn't hurt to tell the people at the store who and why they were recommend; you will probably get better service).
