DVD Drives install the same as any CD ROM or CD-RW drive. they plug into the appropriate controller -- usually the EIDE controller that also controls the hard drive. You might need to add a secondary EIDE controller if all of the available connections are in use. (Most sound cards have an EIDE controller intended for CD-ROM drives that is often overlooked, BTW)

Once you have the drive physically installed, there is usually an installation disk that contains any additinal software the drive might need -- my DVD Drive came with PowerDVD. If the drive didn't come with DVD Software, then I believe WinDVD can be downloaded from the Windows Update site.

The final test, is to put a DVD in the drive and see if it plays automatically -- If it does, you have the software you need, if It doesn't, it just might[/] have a DVD player to load for you. (Shrek for example has a DVD player on the DVD -- it's next to worthless, but it's better than nothing.)

I have a DVD ROM on my computer and I had to get a decoder/encoder or something and yes you'll need something like WinDVD which is what I use. Afraid there are no free players out there worth getting and I've only seen WinDVD to buy online. I think you NEED a graphics card which most new PCs come with too. So you need:

DVD ROM Drive
Graphics card
Encoder (downloadable software, search for DVD Encoder/Decoder)
Software to run it
