It's time that anyone with a high-speed connection make it their business to obtain a firewall. As anyone with ZoneAlarm knows, we are attacked no less than 5 times a day by other computers that have already been "zombied" by yet other computers that constantly search the web for vulnerable machines.

Imagine how much worse last week would have been had the web been down, and I don't just mean the comfort we all obtained from visiting this fine site, exchanging ideas, ensuring that one another was safe, etc. It takes no great vision to know that future terrorist attacks will include concentrated efforts to disrupt the internet through which so many viital services now flow.

Just as those commercial airliners could become weapons in the wrong hands, your personal system is a weapon that can be used to jam the Pentagon, a news agency, the Red Cross site, anything. It is no longer merely a matter of personal security, but social responsibility. Don't let your machine be used to attack others. Install a firewall. It's free, simple, and it will incidentally make the web a better place.

Sorry for the lecture, but with all this bold talk about the war, etc., I fear a lof of people aren't doing the simplest thing that would help avoid problems in the future.

Thank you

I had forgotten to download Zone Alarm after the hard drive was replaced. :)

Now for the ruth of the matter, about 99% of what zone alarm picks up is internet track and your IP supplier bouncing your internet to make sure it is not a dead source.

There is so much nois on the net it is not always hackers. Please if you are going to put up information about stuff like this. Make sure you leave the truth behind. Just dropping info care and causes people to panick. Which is stupid... Here is an example. It is something that everyone needs to know about and make sure they are protected from it.

McAfee.com has seen a large and growing number of systems
infected with the W32/Nimda@MM. This is a HIGH RISK virus
that is spread via email. W32/Nimda@MM also spreads via open
shares, the Microsoft Web Folder Transversal vulnerability
(also used by W32/CodeBlue), and a Microsoft content-type
spoofing vulnerability.

The email attachment name VARIES and may use the icon for an
Internet Explorer HTML document.

It will attempt to spread itself as follows:

- The email messages created by the worm include content
that allows the worm to execute the attachment even if
the user does not open it.
- It modifies HTML documents, so that when this infected
window is accessed (locally or remotely), the machine
viewing the page is then infected.

For more information on W32/Nimda@MM, please visit:

NOw that is information...... and it is true and I would check it out.

Respectfully

Cyan.. BCS, MCS, CSA, MCSE.

OK

So what can I do to protect my machine.

I'm getting broadmand installed on 4 October.

If there's a free download I'd like to know about that as well.

I tried to download ZoneAlarm (Free Version) but I had no indication it was installed. All I do know is that my machine kept crashing after my attempted download.

pp - your download didn't work.

You need to uninstall and try again.

That troll is wrong. I used to have Black Ice, which apparently isn't perfect enough, but it does provide a very nice list of IP addresses that have tried to enter your system. I had upwards of five per day, and during that huge virus/worm outcry a few months back, I had 50 attacks a day from zombies looking to rally more zombies for denial-of-service attacks. It was possible to trace the IP addresses, which I did occasionally. Once, for a few days, it was a little Wall Street shop trying to find its router (!) by pinging the hell of out a lot of machines. Frequently it was my ISP (whose name was ID'd on the list). Many times it was a web site in Australia that was obviously defuct, but whose door was open for others to use the site's power to hack the web. A lot of probes were looking for the Sub 7 Trojan Horse virus; once this is inside your system, any asshole with a very public "key" can activate your system and attack others with it.
None of this even asks what people who actually care about your existence might do to you. I have assumed that the thousands of attacks logged by Black Ice were from strangers just wanting to screw around. There's nothing to be said for not securing this very personal and powerful little machine.

Troll.. listen here you dumb fuck..... I m not a troll I have been here for over a year.. with 4 different nicks.. and I have more knowedgle about computers than you will see in you life time.. I have 3 computer companiess that deal in nothing but computers, software and hardware.. I do code cracking for companies that need it down. For when employees leave and lock there programs and don't give them the password.

I am about 1 year away from my Ph.D in Computer Science.. unless you have anywhere close to the knowedgle I do.. I wouldn't say anything..

Now..

Shadowsource is right. To see if zone alarm is running or working. Whne it installs it should appear in the task bar(to the lower right of your screen. If it is not. the installtion went bad. and you need to reinstall...........

Well for someone so clever you never worked out how to log in did you.

And why do you need more than one username ?

And don't badmouth people for making a mistake, instead point out their error and leave it at that.

You where thought to be a troll because troll's don't register and since it's a good bet that most people who troll would also "hack", it's not beyond reason that a troll wouldn't want people to download something that might make life hard for them when they hack.

If you down loaded it right it should put a small green and red icon in the quick launch tray on the bottom right off your screen, if it's not installed but downloaded then it may appear on your desktop as a zip file which you willl have to unzip and install also look in your "C" drive (hard drive) for a folder labeled "unzipped" it could be in there and just needs installing by hitting the launch icon.

I've been using zone alarm for about six months and it's worked fine for me I suggest you follow Shadowsources advice and unistall it if it still doesn't work then try to download it again it's worth it.

No way to make friends, asshole -

Shadowsource is right...........
You didn't quarrel with the points I was making about the fact that attacks do take place constantly on unsecured systems. Then you agreed with me. Your brain needs a reboot.
