Hello. Is it possible to save a live web broadcast? If so, how? And can you some how set your computer to save it w/o you being there at the time?

It is possible to save anything that is sent over the Internet to your computer, the question becomes if you have the software to do it.

Some of it depends on your the video streaming protocol/codec used, some of them make a copy of the steam in your cached files that you can later copy out.

There are some clients for Linux that will allow you to save live threads, I'll assume you don't run Linux or a Unix though :)

A google search for saving streaming video to hard disk returned several good results. One of them being http://emoney.al.ru/streaming/ which details how to save several different codecs.

Of course you take the legalities of saving streamed media into your own hands, streamed movies for example are only legal when they are being streamed, it becomes pirated video if you save it to play back outside the agreement entered between you and the streaming site.

Some people don't care if you save streamed content, some do, basically same legal issues as normal movies and mp3s.

As far as setting it to save at a certain time search for automation programs or use the windows scheduler to launch the program when the web cast starts.

Thank you, I will give it a try! There is something I don't want to miss tonight but I won't be home.

Let me start off by saying that I don't disagree with you on this point, and I'm certainly not an anti-RIAA nut, but I do have a question. How would recording streaming media to your hard drive be any different than recording a TV movie on your VCR?

*goes and deletes all of the mp3 and avi files off his machine so the RIAA doesn't bust him after this post*

In many ways it isn't any different and you wont be able to record HDTV broadcasts in the future. A new flag was recently approved that will prevent new recording equipment from recording it. This was pushed through by the movie industry because of the quality of HDTV broadcasts they didn't want people pirating stuff from the air waves.

At the end of the day you probably wont get in trouble for it as long as you don't broadcast you are doing it. When cassettes came out a lot of people copied those, same thing with video cassettes which was also illegal basically I just felt compelled to indicate that technically unless the creater of the content has expressly given you permission to make a copy of the streamed media you are not licensed to do so.

I agree that some of the new restrictions are quite absurd and I'm can't stand many parts of the DMCA, in fact this week a person who reported vunerabilities in software was sent a cease and desist letter threatening legal action for violation of the DMCA, the company obviously has no interest in making their software more secure.

Hopefully in the next few years we will be able to get people into congress who actually have an understanding of technology and how it can benefit society.
