Help! I am having trouble with Adobe. When I click on something to open, I just get that little box. I can view the document only by right clicking and saving it. I assume I need to change the settings somehow, but what?

I take it that the problem is only with opening a PDF online and not with doubleclicking a local document?

If you can double-click a PDF file to open it after you've saved it, then the problem is likely to be the Active-X settings in your brower.

If you can NOT double-click a file, then it's probably the file associations in View/Folder Options for PDF files.

I can open an already saved filed by double clicking. How do I fix an active X setting? Thanks!

In IE4 and later, it's in the security tab of Internet Options in the custom settings for each zone. Active-X (and java scripting" can be set to allow, disallow, or prompt.)

If it is your active-x settings, yu should be having problems with Real Player and Flash Movies and other programs that require Active-x to invoke them for streamed information.

Maybe you can help me with another problem too????? I don't think they are related b/c I have had the problem with Adobe for some time now, I just never addressed it. Anway, I was having trouble with my comcast account, the sign on page was not fulling opening. I went to tech. support and they said it was a problem with IE. So I went to install/uninstall and click on "fix problem" or something like that. My page is loading now, but my mail account is acting strange. When I clicked on reply, to an email the SEND To box had strange characters in it, rather then the address of the person I am sending to. It was like this also in the box where you can change the priority of the mail, and in the attachment option.

I use "prompt" for active-x controls, because I'm paranoid, but there are some pages I want to view that require active-x controls -- anything with a SWF or Flash animation.

I use Allow for java-scripting, because I'm not so paranoid I'll put up with a dozen requests to allow java-scripting for half the pages on the web and the web-trap function of my virus checker blocks "malicious javascripting" fairly reliably.

The variety of problems you're having suggests that you might need to do a thorough scandisk of your hard-drive and may also have some RAM problems -- specifically a problem with the RAM address range that the scratchpad/clipboard function of Windows is normally winding up assigned to or the section of yur hard-drive where that section of the virtual memory swap-file gets stored when not being actively used.

What version of Windows are you running?

Windows ME, which I know SUCKS! So should I just make those changes and run scan disk?

The first solution to any problem when Win ME is involved is to reboot your system and try it again. It's got some serious known bugs in it's memory management functions.

A PM will be heade your way in a minute or two with step by step suggestions.

Thank you so much. I have had other problems in the past with ME that you have helped me with. I should just shell out the money to get XP.
