Is this thing a virus, a worm, or spyware?

I have it, and I can't get rid of it.

The latest MacAfee, Stinger, Ad-Aware, and SpywareGuard - nothing.

MacAfee keeps wiping it out, it keep showing back up.

It lives on.

Any ideas? Please?

You may want to try SuperAntiSpyware or CCleaner both available at download.com. The first is simple to use the second is a little more dificult as it take a little computer savy to know what to have it delete and what not to delete.

Sympathy offered. MY PC caught it as well, and I can swear from experience that MacAfee--and most other antivirus software won't work. Most can detect Poebot but can't remove it.

Poebot (also known as Backdoor.Win 32) is technically a worm rather than a virus. It spreads through network shares and installs itself in the registry of Windows operating systems. It's essentially spyware that allows easy outside access to your files--it's very popular among those parasites who are hoping to steal your bank/credit card numbers, Pins, etc.

The only cure is to remove it from the registry itself. This, in itself, is relatively easy, but you need to be absolutely certain what you're excising. Removing the wrong bits and pieces can partially or wholly deactivate your operating system.

I got rid of a trojan (with Kendo's help) with Ewido. I now have Superantispyware installed as well.

I searched Spyware Info for the type of thing I had, too, and there were instructions on trying to remove it. You can ask them a question on how to get rid of it and they do respond, but it can take a while (5 days? a week?)

If your lucky enought to be runing XP you could restore your registry to a point before the entry for the worm was installed.

You're right, of course, but unfortunately I didn't learn that fact until after I excised the worm the hard way

From what I've read, it seems that the removal procedure is almost wholly dependent upon the specific "flavor" of Windows. Some fairly specific information is available at Sophos' site:
