I'm such a dill when it comes to these things......

I'm getting a pop up window saying that I am missing a dll file (well at least thats what I think it says?), I know that when I restart windows should automatically repair the missing file - but its not.
Is there any way or anywhere I can get a replacement dll file?

The pop up box say's that this file has been replaced with an older version by another program I have run (??) and to restart my computer so it can repair itself. The file missing/wrong is
C:\windows\system\dsound.dll

do you have the recovery/reformat disc?

on the recovery portion of the disc it should fix your problem.

(I have a HP computer, so maybe this is just something I have an option to do, not sure)

I do have a recovery disk but in the past we have had problems when we have tried to use it - we bought the computer second hand and I think the disk is scratched...

I tried to attach that file to the post but it wouldn't work. I am sure someone out there knows how to do it but I don't. Sorry about that.

If you PM me an e-mail address I will e-mail the file to you. I know aol will alow that sort of attachment.

Simplest things first:

Try using the "find" menu item and searching for the missing/wrong file. You may find another copy somewhere else on the system. If you do, and it's newer, rename the older one and copy the newer one to the folder where the older one lives. It's not unusual for there to be more than one copy of any given DLl and to have the wrong one getting "found" first when the system tries to use it.

Failing that, try using WinZip (downloadable) to search the .CAB files on your recovery CD for the DLL you're having trouble with. If you find it, and it's newer than any on your hard drive, then extract it, rename the existing one on your HD, and copy the one from the recovery disk to the same folder.

If all the above fail, you're gonna have to try finding the right version from a friend with the same version of Windows, or on the web, most likely.

And Bindii? If the machine will handle it, you might consider shelling out the bucks to upgrade to Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Both are far, far better than either Win98 or WinME. Do NOT, under any circumstances, upgrade to WinME. It's generally worse than Win98.

Thanks so much synnerman! :)

I will pm you my email address now!

The e-mail is sent but it won't help. All I could send was the reason I couldnot upload the file.

Sounds like the suggestions of paphian are the better alternative.

Good luck!

Thanks Synnerman, I got the email (and have replied) I will try Paphians idea (thanks as well!) I'm just terrified that I will do something wrong - cause when it comes to computers I usually do.....lol

I did a search like you suggested from my find menu and there is only one file there...but I'm hopeless and don't know if I am supposed to have more than one or even where the damn file is...

An interesting note. I found two instances of that file on my hard drive. Both had the same date which was exactly four years to the day from when you posted this question. 5/11/98. Your post was before midnight therefore was 5/11/02.

Lmao...so do they expire, did you steal it or did Lit eat my sound file??

Am I supposed to have 2 files?

I think dsound.dll is a part of DirectX.

I suspect that you installed something that requires DirectX capability that loaded an older version of DirextX than you laready had.

Check the Windows Upgrade site for the newest version of DirextX and install that. It should upgrade all of the files to the most current versions.

If you only have the one, and the system is complaining, you'll have to go to "Plan B" (the second suggestion I made). :(

I did some further checking...

...and Weird Harold is right. dsound.dll is part of DirectX. You should be able to go to Microsoft's site and download the latest version of DirectX for Win98 to cure the problem.
