Computer Hardware/Hard Drive Question

I'm trying to install a 2nd hard drive on my computer. Its already got Win98 SE on it BUT I want it to be the slave drive. However - no matter which connector I hook it up to the computer insists on trying to boot from the older drive instead of the already installed drive.

When I remove it from the chain everything boots up fine. Whenever I add it I have problems.

Any suggestions?

BTW - the newer Drive is 60gig 100bus (I think) - the older drive is 14gig 80bus (I think.)

Have you got one hard drive as master, and the other for slave?

You have the partition active. Go in with FDISK and kill the active bit on the partition. This will prevent the computer from using it to boot. By turning off the active bit on the partition, this should not destroy any data on the hard drive. (Only a guess, but it's happened to me before.)

Dill....

hate to be an asshole.....

how well have you consulted the documentation?

have to change the little jumpers on the back of the hard drive to switch from slave to master

Thanks Explain.. I can try that.

Riff - *lol* - DOCUMENTATION? Not sure I still have the documentation for the old drive.

FDISK is a good idea - it did occur to me that I might have to change a setting in FDISK or on the BIOS.

Oh hell yeah - I remember that! And you can't tell me which, can you? That's in the documentation?

I better start looking for it.

if you have the documentation it will help :)

but they usually have signs on the back of the hard drive too so somethings you can just change it using those but depends on the drive

There are those little things on the back of the hardrive called "Jumpers". The menuals you got with the hard drives should tell, and give you a diag rem to how to do it.

Or just get a computer techo to do it.

I am a computer techo! *LOL*

Well - not hardware - not desktop PCs- that's not my specialty. I do architecture, software, security...

UYou need to change the jumpers on one hard drive to slave... The pertition s shouldn't have t o be changed.

slave... master... sounds all sexual to me? Where is the computer advice?

Ah... computers first... then hardcorse sex, hotstuff. At least today... *lol*

I do m ostly software and Internet, but I do know a bit on hardware. Maybe a computer techo which deals with hardware might help?

I have a neighbor who can help but he's not around today. However I think the advice about the jumpers is good and I'm going to give it a try as soon as I can tear myself away from Lit...

no need to edit the partition at all.
stick with moving the jumpers around and look on the hard drive, usually it'll tell you how to put the jumpers in for master/slave/and cable select.

also, there are 2 cables for the IDE equipment such as hard drives and CD ROMs. the drive at the end of a cable is looked at as the master by a computer, and the one in the middle plug is the slave, but you definitely have to have the jumpers in their correct place or the puter will give you errors.

damn, thats the most typing in one shot ive done in months i think

In my original post, I had assumed you had the master/slave jumpers set correctly. The jumpers settings are shown in a diagram on the top of the hard disk. You may need to check your existing hard disk too. It may not be set as a master.

There are usually three settings you can put the jumpers into. Master, Slave (or secondary), and the third is like AUTO for autodetect. Your existing disk should have the jumpers set to MASTER and your new one should be set to SLAVE (or secondary.)

If this doesn't correct it, then use the FDISK as a last resort to see if the partition is active on your slave disk and eliminate that.

You can find doumentation on your hard disk by typing in the model number printed on it into some internet search engine. I'm sure it'll pop up there.

Wolf - thanks - that helps. I wasn't sure which cable went to which either and forgot to ask that question. Logically you'd think that the first one in the chain would be the Master... so thanks for pointing out that the one at the end is Master!

I have two hard drives, and one is master, one is slave. Pertitions should only come into things if you are setting up a dual/tri/quad-boot system.

I have had a dual, tri, a nd quad-boot system. Pertittions shouldn't really bother you unless you wish to divide a hard drive for a dual/tri/quad boot system.

I hate hardware. I got A+ because my boss insisted on it.

Dill. Think Linux. Linux is the future.

Greeat thanks! I'll check the drives for the info and if I can't find my documentation I'm sure I can find it on the net - they're both IBM drives.

No... don't need a dual boot. I just want to use the second drive for storage of files.

At work we do A LOT with Linux. But at home its fun and games. Other than coming online I maily use my home desktop to play computer games. Linux won't cut that - at least not yet, probably never since its really for server use - and the security issues would probably cause problems.
