If my computer keeps rebooting for no apparent reason, what does that mean???

I've had this problem before. It would reboot, but I was usually able to get it to stay on after one reboot.
Today it's rebooting over and over and over and over.
Nothing obviously wrong; no error messages; nothing listed in the event log, etc, etc.

If it helps, I have XP, run Firefox.

Check the fans, both on the power supply (at the back of your computer) and on the processor (inside your computer). Restarting is often a sign of overheating - the computer is reacting to protect itself. If it is that, it needs to be fixed, pronto, before something bad happens.

Other than that, do you have an anti-virus, firewall, spyware-checker?

A continual reboot is a symptom of a viruses of the past couple of years. Get your definitions updated, reboot into safe mode and run antivirus...

The Earl wins the prize!

Last week we had a new CPU fan put in and they thought the power supply fan was fine; today (after reading Earl's post) I checked the power supply fan and it was dead. Took it back to the shop and got a whole new power supply put in. Fingers crossed that I'm fixed now.

Hurrah, I hope.

Otherwise, we were going to have to draw straws and figure out who was going to send you their computer. We can't have you not on Lit.

Yeah. Don't I know it. The cool thing about a small town is that you can take your computer in to the shop and they remember you from last time (so don't charge you for labor) and have it done within an hour.
But fingers crossed that I'm all fixed up now. So far so good.

If it was cycling on and off every few seconds it was prob'ly just a stuck switch.

The ATX Power supplies use a momentary switch instead of one that lock on or off. If the switch sticks it will turn on then after 5 swconds will cycle back off and then back on and so on.

Hubby and I both have overheating problems, too - and, living in the desert, all kinds of dust gets in there. So we go through lotsa cans of air.
Jett,
I think with the two of you, air will not help. Hubby stays hot trying to cool you down, a very difficult task.
*snuggle* *hugs* *lick*
