Having had a discussion over the past couple days in the PC vs Mac thread the question of backup files came up. Well, it got me to thinking. While I have a very nice up to date laptop I do a lot of work on my older desktop Dell. As a way of responding/reading emails, writing, listening to music, and general use it still performs fine. When I say old I mean it still uses a floppy as a feature. I've replaced the CD reader with a new DVD/CD recorder drive and it has a new flat screen monitor but this is what I find myself doing. I save a chapter to a floppy, the hard drive in the computer, an external hard drive, and sometimes flash memory so I can edit on the laptop at work.
I'm curious as to what others do.

Saving vs. gnashing of teeth

I hear ya on the compulsive saving. My technique is one of the most modern and simplest ones, since even the thought of losing story/edit data bothers me. I use a web-based email system (Gmail or Hotmail as examples), attach the updated files I want saved, and either email them to myself or just let it save a draft copy (depending on how the system handles them). The important trick is to let the mostly reliable systems of those large companies--which have professional backup procedures--save the data for you.

Happy writing.

Kev got it right. I have all my projects in Google Documents' file library function. They've got industry grade backup, so I don't have to.

Plus I copy the latest versions of all files I work on to the flash menory in my cell phone, so I have it with me at all times if I need to work off line.

Let see...flash drive 4gig, external hard drive 1Tb, local hard drive 720gig. I tell you three times is enough for me and they are all under my control.

If I feel it's really important I burn the data to a cd or dvd and store it some where safe, like the trunk of my car. :D

Why did you give me the idea of backing up on a CD, yikes

Back your files up to a CD or DVD every now & again.
It's enough; it works for me.
:)

I'm still in the era of filing a backup to floppy disk. I know these are on the way out, but nothing's permanent storage--even CDs and DVDs.

The real backup I went to using, though, is publishing the material to the Internet and/or to e-books/print. That was what brought me to Lit. in the first place. I had been putting stories up on one site as a backup file to my computer storage, and that site hiccupped, so I decided to post everything to multiple sites. Lit. is one of those.

I have 2 8 gig and 2 4 gig flash drives and I save my docs., pictures or whatever to at least two of them. It's safe and convenient. :D

I've found real deals on floppy disks at thrift stores. a 10 pack for $.99

I was wandering through the local MicroCenter and see they now have 64GByte USB Flash drives for $189. Very cheap when you think about it. I remember when 64mByte hard drive was the size of a washing machine and cost 5 grand and now I can get 1000 times that for less than 200 dollars.

64gb flash drive could hold all my stories, all my pictures, all my data.

I've seen 500 gig external hard drives at Walmart for $89.00.

A copy on the hard drive, a copy on docs.google and a copy on a flashdrive. I don't think my stuff is worth more effort than that.

Now my nekkid girl pix, those go on DVD's!

Um...5 500gb - 1tb externals on the home computer, and 3 500 gig portables for the laptop.

Too much?

When I consider how much of it is sexual in nature, I realize I should probably be seeing a shrink.
