Tell about your composite decking. Satisfied? Manufacturer you would like to plug or trash? Give me the goods.

Or show me your tits.

Love,
Pete

I'm curious about it as well. My deck is rotting. But the composite is very spendy.

Definitely pricey. Wood is not cheap these days.

Plastic lasts a long time. Easy maintenance. Made from water bottles and trash.

trex is good, but spensy.
there's a ton of competitors, check yelp for reviews.

if.you're going over concrete there's these great 24x24 Ipe wood deck tiles that are self draining, pretty sweet

one thing about faux decking is that they hold WAY more heat than real wood. like, on a sunny day you can't be barefoot on that shit.

Yes. Burns tootsies and grows/shrinks more than old school wood.

I am replacing the decking. The rails and structure are in good shape.

Gonna be there a while yet??? Get the plastic.

Gonna sell soon, or feeling like a cheap fuck? Get the cheap wood.

Want something a tad better? Get the upgrade wood. Pick through the boards if you have to go through every lumber bundle in the store. Buy the dry ones. Pick for straightness and uniformity of the boards and less for for knots, but make sure the knots are tight. Put that shit down like your very life depends on it - straight, true, and screwed down with premium deck screws. Stainless is best. Then after it dries out for a few weeks, use a good oil-based stain on it, and douche that shit on there every year. Thompson's is for pussies.

There's some free experience based on well over 30 years in the industry.

I didn't know about the heat. I'm always barefoot on the deck. :(

I could put outdoor carpets down but I hate when they are wet and squishy under my tootsies.

Thanks for the advice and the tits.

I just finished house hunting, inspector comes out thursday!

One of the homes I looked at had a bunch of that decking. Granted, it was 14 years old and those products may have improved since then, but it looked like shit. Sure, it was structurally sound but it was faded really bad. IMO, weather aged real wood looks better.

Some of it was warped, there were some popped screws, and rusty screw head spots.

Thanks, Wat. I do all of my projects as if I am going to be here forever. I would make a shitty flipper. It is going to be composite.

Nice tits.

Congrats on your new space! This is a new place for me. I knew the deck had issues when I bought it. I replaced the rotten boards with pressure treated pine. It buys my some time to figure out the rest.

About to rip ours out and re-build. It could be today, depending on the installation of the sliding door.
It shall be an interesting project, as neither of us know how to build.

Fortunately, apartment renoes have gotten me out of the Perfection Mode of repairs.

For example, my house is 106YO and has a lovely covered front porch. I'd do the penta-treated T&G flooring if I were still in PM. I'm not. Besides, I'd easily overbuild the neighborhood if I get too crazy.

My plan is, keep the place up, put it on the market in 3-5 years, and move to the Southeast somewhere.

That means, the shitty 5/4x6 p/t decking stays, but with a coat of oil-based deck paint so it has the same idea as what ought to be there.

I used Trex for my small "show only" deck out front. I went with a darker cedar color, and after 4-5 years, it looks fine. However, it does fade a little. My neighbor did his entire back deck, and used a lighter color and I have to tell you, it looks like shit. Also, his is not maintenance free, like he thought, he still needed to power wash it for mold....and I noticed it does cup a little. Plastic will never rot, but its not all that.

I have a wooden deck out back and I just replaced two boards after 15 years, went to home depot, cost me 20 bucks. That aint that bad. But if you don't seal wood, it will rot....

Tear it down yourself! Put on the leather gloves. Get a bigass hammer and a pry bar.

It is invigorating.

We have some sort of saw, so we are just going to cut the old one out. Should only take an hour or two.
