Ran across this link on Reddit - a list of common misconceptions and explanations/citations/links with further expansion. I've learned some things from it, thought I'd share.

From an authorial standpoint, this can be a useful tool to inject conflict - one believes a misconception, another doesn't - or personalize a character if taken at a quirk-level rather than an aggressive proselytizer.

... or to justify cousins getting it on.

Oh, that's EASY, don't need these for that...

They haven't met since they were kids.

Costume party

Shooter with a noncon & voyeur/voyeuse fetish

Repressive government with arbitrary rules

Their current significant others are incestuous brother & sister, and on learning of the relationship decided to trick the cousins

Hyperhorny wackoweed created in the lab - they're the first victims.

Alien abduction

etc.... *wry grin*

Following the link you provided:

Pregnancies from sex between first cousins do not carry a serious risk of birth defects

So if risk of birth defects were posed as a reason not to be with one's cousin, it can be argued that that is a common misconception.
