Is it me, or do we all have to listen to news reports explaining how "This Christmas Season has been disapointing to retailers" every fricken year?

To my way of thinking, if every single year is a disapointment, then maybe you've set your sights a little to high. Or maybe all of your commercials have failed to whip the unwashed masses into fit's for credit card madness? Maybe putting up Christmas decorations in the Mall in June has deminished the holiday somewhat? Maybe the radio stations playing Christmas songs 24 hours a day for months have made us immune to the joy they are supposed to inspire? Maybe the non stop commercial assault by the retail industry has reduced the holiday season to little more than an excuse to run our credit card bills up to something aproaching the national debt?

Or maybe... just maybe... people have actually figured out that the holiday is actually about family and friends and good times, not just about buying cheap plastic trash that will probablly break in a few days anyway... maybe?

Nah... they probablly just need a few more commercials.

I don't think we need more Christmass commercials. I don't think that the Chrismass songs they have been playing since well before Thanksgiving are necessary. However, it will continue along the same line this Christmass, just like last.

The reason we're always hearing how disappointing the Christmas season is for retailers is that the retailers often have unrealistic expectations.

Every year, they put plans into place for what they expect to do, sales-wise, for the year, and for each month. And every year, without fail, they plan to have an increase in sales.

At some point, your increases have to stop, don't they? Reality says they do, but unfortunately retail has little relation to reality.

Okay, I'm with you CD, the retailers may be dissapointed, but I refuse to be. Starting around halloween (or is it the Fourth of July these days), I refuse to go to the mall as soon as the Christmas deco's go up. At least until after Thanksgiving. For cryin out loud, can't we enjoy each holiday as it comes?

As to the music. Don't play the radio.

However, once Thanksgiving's over, then I'm a Christmas junkie. Play those carols, decorate the house, bake them cookies! Watch "IT's A Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Story" till my eyes glaze over.

Thank god the mrs does most of the shopping and battles the mall dwellers.

I normally don't even think of shopping until the 15th or so.

Sometimes its fun to go to the mall shortly after Thanksgiving . . . not to shop, but rather to watch masses of people locked in no-holds-barred mortal combat over the last $25 DVD player.

I've actually gotten to the point where I am more interested in enjoyed the leisurely pace of the vacation than gifts themselves. I never thought I would say that . . . particularly when I was six.

:D

ok ok.. kidding aside for a short moment.
i see your point and raise you one.
i am now listening to xmas music and will be for the entire month of december. i will shop online and some in stores.. but not much since i have a growing dislike for masses of people.
but
the most special thing about xmas for me is to see the joy on the faces of my children...my family when they finally wake up and see that really this is a season for loving...not buying.
even though we still give over to it.
we will be making most gifts this year so itll be more special than ever.
ok..
sincere post over and back to silly-vella-ness

I think the me really. I hate hoew there is Christmas stuff out in SEPTEMBER! It's awful. I mean yes I buy alot of my presents early but I don't want christmas to start right back in the summer! I am a bit more christmas inclined now and I sing along to the christmas songs and start buying christmas decorations and such but then Christmas is on its way.

My sisters birthday is on Sunday. After her birthday the count down to chistmas starts in earnest. we'll get the decerations up and start being christmassy (actually we're taking Beth on a steam train to see Santa on Sunday this year so christmas will start then but thats by the by)

Anyhow -sod the retailers. Christmas is so much more than buy buy buy!

In today's day and age, there is no reason to go to the mall. Just do all your shopping online!

My goal this year is to make my only trip to the mall the one for picking up a couple Christmas Tree Angel gifts.

Of course Min will be sending me to the mall to get something also, but hey, I can HOPE!! :)

Retailer whine and moan every year. Where I worked the buyers purchased by the ton, they cut back bonuses from workers and now give out pathetic raises (15 cents if you're lucky). they still blame things on 9/11. Yet they still buy and buy and buy so they can mark it up and make you think you're getting a deal when it goes on sale.

My favorite is when they punish co-workers for wanting some family time or shopping time. Black Friday was mandatory for all workers, no excuses....but they did feed you...only because they didn't want you to leave the store on lunch and shop elsewhere....why did I do that so many years????

Retail sucks!!! Make someone a gift instead.

It could be the fact that people don't have as much money with what it being a recession and all.

Just saying.

Christmas has always had its crass commercial shell for as long as I can remember. Still, it's the time of the year I always feel the closest to my family and I can't think of much I'd trade the ability to see the faces of them when they get the item they really wanted for. It is, as the cliche goes, about the giving not the getting.

Does anyone remember when Christmas was magical?
When you were at your best because if you weren't you didn't get to see Charlie Brown's Christmas or the Grinch, and they only came on once a year?
When the first snowfall excited you and you could stay out playing until you almost got frostbite, but you didn't want to leave the snow?
When department store windows were an attraction and on Sunday's when the stores were closed, it was a treat to drive by and look at them?
When you saved your money to buy mom the Gallon of Jean Nate' she never wore but loved, or the tie for dad that matched nothing he wore?

and was anyone else a little spooked that Santa entered your house while you were sleeping? and you tried to stay up to see the reindeer?

Christmas ramble.

Abs yeah I remember. I do remember and I hope to make christmas like that for my little girl....well I can't do anything about the shops shutting on a Sunday...but we're gonna make it magical and try and keep christmas at christmas time for her, it's more special like that.
