I noticed today that a couple negative/personal comments on two of my stories are gone. I didn't remove them, frankly because one challenged me to leave it. Do the powers that be remove comments? I thought that was left to the author's discretion.

Somethings (Spam, links, etal) get chopped by administrators. Some comments can be reported by other readers. Laurel herself might have read your story and thus acted.

Challenged by a troll? He could blame you and retaliate.

I have seen some rude and crude comments disappear on their own. I don't know who would have the time to read and filter what must be a mountain of comments per day, but there could be some algorithm that identifies certain ones for review. Maybe some users (or IPs) have been flagged for review.

Guess maybe the site administrators see the "I dare you to erase" comments the same way I do--as attempts to control the author--and delete them just as I normally would.

Interesting thing about anymouse. They may be anonymous to us but to the site they are still tied to their ISP. My take is that they make comments that break the rules and the next thing you know everything they have posted goes south.

That would also explain a lot in the sweeps. They vote on stories over the years and then they start trolling. Then all votes are swept.

Just some ideas outside the normal box.

I received a slew of comments one night, I think about twenty stories. All of them called me a "nigger loving faggot" even though no stories were interracial or GM.

Around that time Laurel had posted somewhere that they were deleting comments along those lines so I reported one story and sent her a PM leaving it up to her if she wanted to delete them, but I figured she would want to see it seeing there were so many.

She deleted them and replied that she knew this was a "serial troll" and that she had been in the midst of sweeping their handiwork before I sent her the message.

I delete any comments that are personal attacks. The story is fair game, because I asked for comments (by default). I leave those no matter how negative they may be. But nobody here knows me well enough to attack me personally, so those go.

And that is why I laugh at any negative comment that are supposed to be attacks on me personally. They don't know me, so how could what they say mean anything to me? I sometimes answer them, telling them their words have no meaning to me and to go tell their mommy they wrote bad words on her computer.

We probably get the same result then. I just don't want them to have a forum to spew. You let them know they mean nothing to you. Either way, they don't get the attention they expected.

I did answer one saying that I usually delete personal attacks, but he seemed so desperately in need of attention and a hug that I was going to leave his. And I did.

Here's one for you Zeb I just got a comment saying words to the effect of "I haven't read this story because it's shit" It made I larf. I've just got to leave it up to give others a giggle. I wonder why it was Hey Nonny Mouse that posted it. :)

re: the main theme a lot of my insulting ones got deleted. I've looked back hoping for a giggle and found they had disappeared. I know comments are monitored because on one story I kept seeing "Comment deleted by administrator" I had to close comments on that one until certain people calmed down. Still as Oscar Wilde said "There is only one thing worse than being talked about. Not being talked about."
