I was going to blurt this the other day, but I got too excited about it...

You see... in 2003 I lost the majority of my sense of smell. My favorite things... Like Cedar, fresh baked bread, and ripened fruit no longer register to my obsolete olfactories. At first, I would console myself with thoughts like, "At least I'm not bothered by [insert bad odor here] anymore" or "At least it isn't my vision" or even "At least I'm not lactose intolerant"... (At this juncture, I pause to say that my heart goes out to those of you who cannot tolerate lactose... :rose:  )

Anyway. To make a long story short... I stopped to smell the flowers the other day. It is funny how I never stopped doing that even though I knew I couldn't smell them. But Monday was different.

Because for the first time in 4 years
I could SMELL the flowers!!!
:nana: :rose: :D :rose: :nana:

*happy sigh*

So I did what any self-respecting Litster would do... And poemed it. You don't have to like it. I just wanted to share. :D

So! Have a good day all... A don't forget to stop and smell the flowers every once in a while... You just might be surprised at how much it can brighten your day!!!

*hugs and kisses for everyone*

I used to have the same problem. I couldn't smell anything for about the same ammount of time. Then one day when I was in my last school ever, I went into the cafeteria for breakfast, and I smelled the coffee. Now, I hate coffee, but then I smelled Bacon and Sausages and French Toast, which I like the smell of. So by the end of the day, I was fairly happy as well :D

People keep looking at me as though I am completely insane. I am walking around sniffing EVERYTHING.... But I haven't really noticed many other changes. Still can't smell citrus or bread... *sigh* BUT I'M WORKIN ON IT!!!

"taken for granted
forsaken by the world
yet ever radiant
in your solitude

I sought only
to love you
in your magnificent
simplicity

yet in sore amazement
I cling tenderly
to your beautiful offering
in humbled ecstasy"

I loved every word of your poem but the ones I listed above are really out of this world. You can read my comment if you want. Nice one :)

Congratulations on your returning senses, and that's a beautifully heartfelt poem :rose:

Do you know what happened, or why? Are flowers the only thing you can smell, yet?

 Thank you

I lost my sense of smell because of a series of events including (but probably not limited to): breaking my nose twice, having surgery to put my septum back into place, and having an entire canister of MACE explode in my face. I really had no expectations for it to come back after all that. It was quite a shock, really.

Since Monday, I have been sniffing pretty much everything I can. Lol.. I was grocery shopping earlier, and spent about 45 minutes trying to smell every type of produce that they had, to no avail. Then I went to a bakery a few shops down, and couldn't smell that either. I also went to a flower shop, and tried a variety of flowers. There are many that I still can't smell. But certain ones that I can. It is all very exciting and gives me hope that it may be just a few more months before another little something breaks through and I catch a wiff of another aromatic delight. *grins*

Oh yes... And some of my candles that I never could smell before, I am finally able to smell... :D (I feel a little silly, but I carry one of them around the house with me, and every once in a while when I just wake up to roll over, I reach over and grab it and smell it, and go back to sleep... )

I lost my mind once. I was wonderful getting it back.

Congratulations.
Thank you. :D

And same to you. *smiles* Of the things I lose on a regular basis, my mind is second only to my car key...

Very cool. I went whithout smell and taste for about a month once before it started to come back, a bit at the time. Maybe the same is happening for you. Congrats. :)

Oh wow! I am insanely happy for you! :D :D :D

I don't know why, but my sense of smell is my all time favorite sense. It's ridiculous, of course. I need my eyes and ears and sense of touch so much more. But smell is so personal and funky and private and sensual, and odors are so rich with meaning and memories and even emotions, things we can barely express. Of all our sensations, smells and tastes are the ones that are the most impossible to describe, beyond words and concepts.

I heard somewhere that smell is unique in that the olfactory bulb - the sensing part of the nose - is one of the most ancient parts of the brain and connects to some of the oldest structures in the brain. It's actually a piece of naked brain that thrusts out into the world and recieves messages directly with no filtering.

That's so great having a sense comie back like that. Like having a part of you reborn...

Congratulations.

You never have to thank me. Infact, it is I who must thank you for sharing such a lovely poem.

LOL Tell me about it! I lost my mind just before my 6 semester finals and it was as if I went to the 7th circle of Hell and came back, all burnt up and scarred.

yay for ghostie :D

now we have to work on gettingyour sense of touch back...you walking through walls is a little inconvenient especially when you take a wrong turn and end up in my bedroom instead of the restroom :p

Wow. Sending cyber bread your way!

Just out of curiosity, how did you tell when your milk was sour?

CYBER BREAD! SWEET!!! :D

Buxxxom - I found out the hard way... *grimaces*

Liar - Wow... I had no idea so many people have had similar experiences in having lost their sense of smell! *smiles* I'm really glad yours came back - especially the sense of taste, too!... What a bland world to live in without taste or smell...

Grace - *hug*... oh wait... sorry about going right through you like that... eh-hem... erm... how embarrassing...
;) :D

Dr. M - I Love your post! And I agree completely! Although I can function in the world much better without a sense of smell than say... without my eyesight. The memories and emotions associated with the sense of smell are so raw and vivid and intimate. It is so amazing to have a chance at rediscovering the world with this added dimension. It is as though parts of me that I hadn't ever realised were trapped away are beginning to bloom again after a hard winter. It makes my mind tingle... akin to when your foot wakes up. When the numb feeling starts to go away.... *happy sigh*

I'm going to be late for work...
Thanks everyone!
