Alex smith laid in bed waking up from his first night back at home. It felt strange to be back in his old room as it didn't seem to fit him anymore. This was a high schoolers room and he had just completed his freshman year in college. He looked around at all his old posters that really didn't seem to describe him anymore. In high school he was this geeky kid that was into D&D and anime, now...well he was still into those but there was so much more to him. He was starting to become a mathematician and he couldn't wait to take down his anime posters and put up the posters of Gauss and Libnez and Newton that his Adviser had given him.

His parents were happy to have him home, especially his mother but that made him a little uncomfortable. They talked about the house rules last night and he thought it was unfair that he still had a bedtime and a curfew. He was going to be 19 in a couple of months and he felt he didn't need all the restrictions.

He rolled over onto his side and just looked across the room at the computer that still sat in pieces on his desk and all the other boxes of stuff he still had to put back and he sighed. He thought he would be happy to be home but he was starting to miss Stanford. The hustle and bustle of the big city is what he missed most. Now that he was back home in this small town he missed being able to walk the streets and have things to do.

Just as he was about to get out of bed the phone rang. "Hello...Oh hey Ashley, yeah I'm home...sounds good...how about we meet in about an hour I need to shower...no I haven't eaten yet...sure see you at the dinner."

---

Being a year younger than her best friend meant she'd been stuck in their small town while he'd gotten to go off to college. Ashley was one of those girls that a small town just couldn't contain. She had big dreams of getting out of here and doing something so much more interesting. She just wasn't sure what yet. But she knew where she was going now. She'd been accepted to NYU and she was headed there in the fall, completely and totally beyond excited to finally get away.

Right now, not too much would make her life better, except finally getting to see him again. they'd kept up with each other, of course, she and Alex, but it wasn't like they got to see each other very often. She'd fallen in love with him before he left, and that old saying seemed to be true for her: absence did make her heart grow more fond of him. So as soon as she knew he was in town, she gave him a call and arranged to meet him for dinner.

She dressed pretty casually, for her. she was a tomboy at heart, but she loved to look good, so her long brown hair was left loose around her shoulders, pinned carefully away from her face. She wore a simple tank top and jeans with a cute pair of flats and her chunky jewelry that she liked to wear. She managed to look like she hadn't put too much effort into her looks while she actually had when she met him at the resturaunt, a big grin on her face and her arms open to hug him as usual.

He hung up the phone and got out of bed, stretching a little and then walked over to the shower. He stripped his underwear off and then turned on the water and waited for it to get hot, using the bathroom while he waited. He then got into the shower and washed up. This was one reason he was glad to be home, no more communal showers.

When his shower was done he got out and shaved, wanting to be cleanly shaven for her. He then combed his hair, not bothering to gel it. He walked to his room still naked, his parents both out at work. He got on a pair of underwear, ripped jeans, and a t-shirt and then headed down stairs. He quickly wrote a note to his parents, leaving it on the kitchen table, grabbed his cell phone and then headed out to the diner to meet his friend.

When he got there she was already there and waiting for him with open arms. He walked over to her and hugged wondering what was with the strange show of affection. He usually got a punch in the arm from her, which he got after the hug. "Hey you look good" he said with a smile and then they walked to there usual seat. "So what do you want for lunch, its my treat today."

Today wasn't just any day, though, today, she was seeing him for the first time in a long time. And that deserved a hug. She wasn't overly affectionate or anything, but she did hug from time to time. This was one of those times, and if it was weird, then it was weird, she didn't care. She was too happy to see him.

She grinned at him once they were sitting. "You too. College is doing you good." She picked up the menu more out of habit than anything. She didn't really need it, she knew what was on it, but she always looked anyways. "I think I'm gonna try something new today," she said, meaning both with what she was going to order and what she'd decided she should tell him. She figured if they were both leaving this little place, she might as well get it out in the open before they drifted apart.

"Yeah it has, and I'm kind of sad being home. THe only good thing about being back in this hell hole is I get to hang out with you again" he said and smiled. He raised an eyebrow at her "Oh, your going to get something new, call the newspapers" he said with a chuckle. When the waitress came over he smiled and ordered his usual chocolate milk, his choice in drinks not catching up to his new lifestyle. He then ordered them some cheese fries and the waitress smiled at him "Welcome back by the way" she said recognizing him. "Thanks" he said wondering what she meant...girls didn't usually notice him.

"And what can I get for you" The waitress asked with a warm smile.

She laughed. "Good luck getting me to come back once I'm gone to college. I've been looking forward to this forever." She had never wanted to live here, and she really didn't think she'd come back, not unless she had a very good reason to. He knew that just as much as anyone else. She was not planning on coming home until she had to.

She smiled at the waitress and ordered herself a soda and a grilled chicken salad instead of her usual burger. Something different, just like she'd said before. Most birthdays had passed without anything changing, but turning eighteen had made her stop and think. Changes were good.

He ordered the burger he forgot to order and then smiled at Ashley. "So you won't come back for me...I see how it is" he says and laughs a little bit. "Trust me I understand, I wouldn't have come back but I needed the free rent right now. That and I was promised my old job back and I need to start saving money so I can get my own apartment back there." The waitress smiled and left the table heading back into the kitchen.

"So what have you been doing with out me?" he asked reaching out and taking her hand in his.

She was grinning her big, easy grin that came so naturally to her, especially around Alex. "We'll just have to find someplace more interesting to meet, that's all," She suggesting easily, nodding. She would never not want to see him, even if today didn't go well, if he didn't feel the way about her that she felt for him.

"Ugh," she answered his question, letting her head roll back on her neck in an overly dramatic show, which was totally like her. "I've been bored off my ass, that's what I've been doing. It's so not fair that you got to leave before me." She held his hand back, trying not to think about it too much, because she knew if she did, she'd blush, and she ddn't want him seeing that yet. She'd blush plenty later.

"Yeah well I can't help being older and smarter" he said with a wide grin. They had always competed with there grades and they were pretty evenly matched. "Speaking of grades remind me to check online today they should be posted. So have you had any luck in the love department or are you still as desperate for men as always" he said teasingly. "I know I didn't have much luck and sadly my goal for my first year at college was not met, I am still a virgin" he said. Just as he said that the waitress came by and set down there drinks and the order of cheese fries he ordered.

"Oh don't be ashamed of that, I think its really sweet that your saving your self for the right person" The waitress said with a smile. She then went back to working and left the two friends alone.

"Yeah, well, you suck," she said childishly, sticking her tongue out at him. She hadn't really grown up too much in the part year, she was just mature enough to go out on her own, but she still had plenty of childish habits like that. "How'm I supposed to have any luck when all the good ones leave," she said, her voice teasing, winking at him and really wishing the waitress would just leave them alone. She was so ready to get out of here, where everyone thought everything was their business, even when it wasn't.

"Well who else left" he asked not really getting what she was trying to say yet. He took a sip of his chocolate milk and smiled a little at her. "So what do you have planned for the rest of the day, I mean it is only noon" he said and then took a cheese fry and started to eat it. "Dig in there hot but really good...these are one of the few things I missed about this town. I think I even missed them more than you" He said teasingly.

She laughed softly at him. "Why's it matter who else left?" She smiled at him, idly stirring her soda with the straw, but not drinking anything yet. She would wait until he actually got what she was talking about, she wanted to see the look on his face when he did finally figure it out. "My only plans for today are avoiding staying home with my mother. She's getting on my last nerve." She fake glared at him before she shrugged. "'S only cuz you can still talk to me, I bet it's hard to miss someone who won't leave you alone," she said, taking a fry and laughing at herself easily.

"Yeah it is kind of hard to miss someone who won't leave you alone, but I did miss you. He smiled at her and continued talking "and I know how you feel my parents are driving me nuts and they were gone when I got up. They want me to have a curfew and a bedtime now that I'm home, what am I 8" he said with an exasperated sigh and continued to eat.

He couldn't help but notice how she seemed distracted by something. She wasn't eating much and she was playing with her drink instead of drinking it. "Whats wrong Ash, you seem distracted" he said using his pet name for her. He was the only one who got away with calling her that.

She forced herself to stop playing with her drink at his question. It was just time to face this head on. She really was distracted right now, and she still didn't really just want to come out and say it. She didn't want everyone in town to hear this, and they would if even one person overheard them. "I am...kinda. There's something I've been wanting to say for a while...I just don't wanna make things weird or anything, that's all." She shrugged, making herself keep her eyes on his.

"Well what do you want to say" he asked looking at her eyes, getting slightly worried that she wasn't being totally honest with him. He bit his lip nervously as he always did and his heart raced as he waited for her to tell him what was on his mind. "It can't be as bad as the time you walked in on your mom and the mail man" he said reminding her of that. The waitress came over and brought the rest of there food and smiled at them. "Is there anything else I can get you. And yeah I remember that it was all over town" she said with a slight chuckle. "That woman will sleep with anyone" she said.

Alex glared at the waitress "No we have everything we need" he said through clenched teeth. As she walked away he looked at Ashley and shook his head "There went her tip" he said with a chuckle.

She was definitely not coming back to this town, ever. She had a feeling the longer the summer went on, the more she was going to never want to come back, and that was fine with her. It was people like their waitress that made her hate this place. She could deal with everything else, but she rumor mill was the thing that killed her. She was flushed red, angry and embarrassed, and not really wanting to say what she needed to say here. She didn't care if he didn't feel the same way, but she knew how the story would go if everyone heard that. It would be that she threw herself at someone and got rejected because she wasn't good enough. She tried not to be like her mother, but it didn't stop the rumors. "Maybe this isn't the right place to tell you," she muttered, turning her attention to her salad.

"Well try to focus on enjoying being with me and stop being so distracted. Once we eat we can go somewhere more private, how about my house?" he reached out and cupped her cheek with his hand "I know its hard for you to live here but look on the bright side you have me as your friend and I will always be here for you to help you through your hard times" he said with a smile. The rest of the lunch time was spent in a nervous quietness. He was worried about what she had to tell him and he ate quickly so they could get back to his house and they could talk.

Once he was done he waved the waitress over and asked for the bill, leaving the exact amount of the bill on the table. He smiled at Ashley "You ready to go?"

She just nodded in agreement, picking at her salad while he ate. He did really help her out. There weren't many people who looked past her mother's reputation and actually saw her for who she was. She was so ready to get away from all of that. She didn't get along with her mother at all, she certainly wouldn't be back too often to see her, and with Alex going to college somewhere else, she was sure that she wouldn't need to come back to see him.

She smiled back at him, but it was half-hearted right now. She was still angry about the damn waitress, she didn't want to be out and about in town today. "Way more than ready," she answered him, getting to her feet.

"Well lets go then" he said as he got up and walked out of the resteraunt with her. "I'll meet you at my house" he said as he watched her get back into her car and he got into his. He drove home still worried about what she had to tell him. Hopefully nothing to bad happened while he was gone. He drove to his house quickly and waited for her to pull into his drive way and when she was there they walked into the house together. He then lead her up to his room which was standard for when she came over. He sat on his bed and looked at her nervously.

"So whats on your mind?"

She drove her crappy little car a lot slower than she usually did, following him back to his house. Not that she actually needed to follow him, she knew where it was, just like everything else in this town. She knew she was worrying him, and she knew she should just tell him it wasn't anything bad, but she couldn't talk in town. She couldn't talk about things in public, she had never been able to. It had always been here at his house or out in the secluded parts of town.

She kind of wandered around his room for a few moments, just reaquainting herself with the place. It had been a while since she'd been up here, and she used it as an excuse to avoid talking at first. She just needed to spit this out. "I love you," she finally just said, and then launched into an explanation, because they'd said the words before, only in a context of just friendship. "Like, in love with you, for a few years now."

He watched as she wandered around his room and he shook his head still worrying about her. When she finally spat out that she loved him he chuckled a little, not realizing what she meant. "I love you to" he said back like he had said millions of times. Once she corrected herself though he blushed and his mouth hung open. He wasn't sure what to say..."How...why...when" he stuttered as he looked at her dumbfounded.

She didn't really want to look back at him, but she did anyway, shrugging. "I dunno, it just happened...and...and you don't have to feel the same way or anything, we can jsst forget I said anything at all and just be friends still if that's what you want, but I had to tell you." It all came out in a rush and once she was done she looked down, scuffing the floor with her foot, waiting for his response. She didn't know what he was going to say, and she just wanted to know that she wasn't fucking up a good friendship right here and now. Even if she was moving across the country from him, she didn't want to lose her best friend just because she had feelings for him.

Alex stood up from the bed and walked over to her, coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. "Don't worry you don't ever have to apologize for your feelings, you should know that by now. And while I'm not sure if I feel the same way...I am flattered that you feel that way. It means a lot to finally have someone love me" he said and just held her as he spoke, his arms pulling her tight against him, his chin resting on her shoulder. Part of him wanted to kiss her but he didn't want it to be weird, though holding her like this was already weird, though it felt right. He liked the way it felt to have her butt pressed against him.

"I just...I don't want things to be weird." She said, relaxing into his arms. She didn't care that he didn't feel the same way, as long as things didn't get weird just because she loved him. And she did love him, very much. She leaned her head back against his shoulder and rested her forehead against his neck with a sigh. She was so tempted to just lean a little further and kiss the skin there, to see what he tasted like, but she was so afraid of things getting weird, she was really trying to avoid that right now.

"so...what now" he asked not sure where to go from here. He was content to hold her like this but it kind of made him want to do other things. Being this close to her, breathing in her sent, and the fact that he looked at her differently now was starting to excite him and he kind of pulled away from her slightly as he started to get a boner. "Oh...sorry..." he said worried that she had felt it.
