Andrew sat in his best friends driveway in his squad car unable to move. He had just witnessed the death of his best friend, Jack, and now had the displeasure of notifying his wife. They had all been friends since high school so he didn't look forward to what he had to do now. A knot formed in the bit of his stomach and then moved up into his throat and he felt like he might throw up with nerves. Taking a few deep breaths he radioed into his captain that he was here and would be off the rest of the night. Dispatch quickly got back to him telling him to take all the time that he needs and that the rest of the force is working to get to the bottom of things with Jack so Andrew could take the next few days off if he wanted to process everything thats going on.

He felt numb right now. It probably hadn't sunken in yet for him. It all happened so quick that he just acted like he was trained to, no emotion entering into it. He stepped out of the car, shutting the door behind him with a loud slam. He then slowly made his way up to the door, straightening his uniform as he walked. Once he reached the door he knocked, as he always did, three times and then rang the bell. That was his signature announcement that he was here.

Amy had been curled up under the blankets when Jack kissed her on the forehead before he left for work. Sometimes she got up and fixed him breakfast, but today he was leaving a few minutes early and he told her to stay in bed and get some extra rest. She had smiled up at him and drifted back to sleep for a little while.

Now Amy was in the kitchen, her dark hair pulled up into a ponytail. She had pasta bubbling on the stove, her homemade sauce simmering beside it. She had a few sips of wine as she cooked. She had the radio on and was humming along to the music. She was barefoot as she stood on the kitchen tile.
Se heard Andrew's characteristic knock. She put her glass down. She unlocked the door and flung it open. Amy gave him one of her sunshine smiles. But she knew something was wrong the moment she saw Andrew standing there alone. His expression was sad and pained.

"Andrew?" Her voice was soft and timid. "Is Jack okay? What's wrong?" She reached out for his arm. She held onto him tightly, she was afraid the world was going to collapse under her feet.

Andrew looked past her which is very odd for him, but he couldn't bear to look her in the eyes. He took a few deep breaths as he felt her hand on his arm. He forced a smile on his face despite feeling like doing anything but smiling. His stomach lurched again and it took all his strength not to wretch as he stood there in the door. "Can I come in Amy I have some news."

Amy took a few steps backwards into the house and sat down on the couch. Amy could read his face.

"Andrew, please....tell me what happened." Her voice was soft and shaky. She could feel her voice beginning to shake. She didn't let go of his arm. Her heart was pounding and she was shaking.

Feeling a rush of humanity run through him he swept her up off the couch and into a hug. "He...he was..." he started but was cut off by a silent sob, tears starting to stream down his face. "He was shot.." he finally choaked out, much more loudly than intended. He embraced her in a crushing hug that, truth be told, was more for him than for her. He held onto her weeping like he never had before. "i...I...I'm so..so...sorry" he stammered between sobs. "I....tried...I..did...what ever I could...but...he was gone...before he it the ground..." he continued. He started shaking as it finally was sinking in that his best friend was gone.

Amy melted against Andrew. She listened to him explain.

"It is not your fault." She whispered. She cried in his arms, letting him hold her close. She knew that Andrew would do anything for Jack. He loved him like a brother. She tried to ask questions, but she was shaking with sobs.

After a few moments, she asked him, "Where is he?" She hated the thought that Jack was alone.
