Comedy is the one thing in life that is essential, in my opinion, to getting through life in one piece. And, because I put such an emphasis on comedy, I think that who you choose as a "favorite" comedian (be it male or female), speaks volumes about what type of person you are and your perspective on life in general.

Tell us who you find funny. I'll go first - and in no specific order of preference.

Dennis Miller
Bill Cosby
Eddie Murphy
Chris Rock
Richard Pryor
Ellen Degeneres
Paula Poundstone - prior to her child molestation charges
Ben Stiller! - ah, a favorite of mine

that's it for now.

I miss Comedy Central now

Some of my faves :

Bill Cosby
George Carlin

There were a few from CC that I liked but can't remember their names.

I agree with you Tn Vixen. Comedy is an essential part of keeping your sanity in this life. My favorites are as follows:

Kevin James
Kevin Meany
Drew Carey
George Carlin (have to be in the right mood)
Chris Rock
Eddie Murphy (Raw is my favorite)

Eddie Izzard
Robin Williams
Dennis Miller (away from football)
George Carlin
John Cleese
Gram Chapman
Eric Idle
Terry Gilliam
Terry Jones
Michael Palin

I went with some friends to see Margaret Cho a few weeks ago. I'd seen her on TV and found her amusing, but live on stage she was hilarious!

Steven Wright
Bill Cosby
Dennis Miller
Dennis Leary
Margaret Cho
Jeff Foxworthy

and of course, much respect to Rodney Dangerfield.

Always had a lot of Bill Cosby's albums growing up. He never needed profanity to be funny.

George Carlin rocks.

Dave attell is one of the funniest comic I've seen as far as new comics go.

"I remember there was this one article in the farm town newspaper that was talking about a guy that got busted having sex with a horse and they didn't even spell my name right". -Dave Attell (Host of the Insomniac show on comedy central)

Geroge Carlin definitley made me laugh with his brand of straight forward pc comdy. Don't know what he was doing on Shiny Time Station though.

John Liguizamo is one of the most energetic comics I have seen. His stand ups Freak and Spicorama are so good I can barely believe its him in half the movies he does. The pest was a great comedy and come on you have to give him credit for his role as the violator in Spawn.

Martin Lawrence is so funny because its like watching the geeky kid at your school talking about all the action he gets or when he beat up the school bully. His comedy is always welcome as far as I'm concerned.

Mel Brooks, Whoopie Goldberg, Bill Murry, Damone Wayans, Bruce Campbell, Chevy Chase, Norm Mcdonald, Hugh Grant, Billy Crystal, Adam Sandler, etc...

Steven Wright above all.
Dennis Miller
Jeff Stillson ( last I saw he's writing for Letterman)
Robbin Williams
Richard Pryor
George Carlin

I think their ideas are funny, not their vulgarity

greaest comedians are olympic figure skating judges and
Dennis Leary

Some of my favorites, in no particular order:

Bill Cosby - I heard "Wonderfulness" as a child - and it's still one of my favorite comedy albums.
Richard Jeni - I've seen his Showtime specials and once live here in LA - hilarious
Richard Pryor - a master
George Carlin - he still cracks me up
Robert Klein - hilarious
Robert Wuhl - yes, he did standup before "Arli$$"
Dennis Miller - "stop me before I sub-reference again"
Steven Wright - "they said breakfast served anytime - so I asked for French Toast during the Revolution"
Mark Mahron - used to host "Short Attention Span Theatre" on Comedy Central - saw him live at the US Comedy Arts Festival a couple years ago in Aspen...great show
Anthony Clarke - "Yes, Dear" is an awful show...but his standup makes me wet myself.....
Robin Williams - I love that he shushes the audience when he's got more and funnier to say.
Billy Crystal - he was the first standup that I ever saw live - he opened for...an musical act in Lake Tahoe that shall forever go unnamed...that my mom, my sis, and I went to see when I was 16. This was before "Soap"...before anyone really knew who he was....and he was great.

Will probably think of more later......

Nigel

Eddie Izzard - without question - a true genius.

Also - honourable mentions go to Billy Connelly and Frank Skinner...both excellent!

I'll go with David Cross.

Bill Hicks and Andy Kauffman were geniuses.

Richard Pryor. Bill Cosby. Lenny Bruce. Robin Williams for his improv skills.
