Church helped develop the most widely used technique, known as Crispr/Cas9, that has transformed genetic engineering since it was first demonstrated in 2012. Derived from a defence system bacteria use to fend off viruses, it allows the “cut and paste” manipulation of strands of DNA with a precision not seen before.

Church, a guest speaker at the meeting, said the mammoth project had two goals: securing an alternative future for the endangered Asian elephant and helping to combat global warming. Woolly mammoths could help prevent tundra permafrost from melting and releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

“They keep the tundra from thawing by punching through snow and allowing cold air to come in,” said Church. “In the summer they knock down trees and help the grass grow....”

Won't be long and we'll be running from big lizards and buying rocket launchers to use on both Dinos and scientific institutions.

And right before they are eaten, certain segments of our culture will still be hammering the need for common-sense rocket launcher laws, if not an outright ban.

:D :D :D

No, these would be elephant farts, for the most part...

What a boon to the ivory trade too. Those suckers had big tusks. YUUUUUGE!

Sir, these are not pet rocks we're talking about. Those that do not know where their circa 1970-something rock is can't be trusted with a mammoth.

I will sleep in the barn with it. (After major barn reno)

Mine is in the family driveway.

Once in a blue moon I drive by. Despite being built in the 1850s, my great-grandfather's house is still there. All of our houses are still there. alas, it is too warm for a mammoth until they work their magic and bring back the ice age...

Not even if I promise to leave the air conditioning on high?

<dejected disappointment>

Yeah, air conditioning increases Glow Ball Warning.

I think there is a mammoth loose in the Bootheel. Someone is firing something very high caliber out in the forest...

<bad words> If it isn't one thing, it's another...

I never had a pet rock. Rocks were all useful items to be stacked, used for fill, etc.

From the number of shots, I think it takes a helluva lot to kill a mammoth...

They should not be shot! we should hug them and squeeze them and call their name george!

I have a nephew who used to collect rocks to dam the creek so as to make his fishin hole bigger.:D
