So how do ward off a cold? I mean you've sneezed twice in an hour, maybe got the tiniest chill down your back and you know unless you act fast you're gonna be sucker punched by someone else's virus

Me, I reach for echinacea, in capsule form, not some machined tablet. I've tried scotch, but then get hungover and sick, vit c - waste of time, garlic? maybe.

Then there's the people who come into work, cough over you and say "I've had a terrible cold for days and this is the first day I've managed to get out" Complete fuckers and I wanna dowse and flame them.

Travel to Key West (what's left of it), Tucson, San Diego, or Hilo.

Common colds are not allowed in these places.

I never caught cold in Tucson.

Orange juice for drinks and steak fajitas for eats. Vitamin C and protein bomb the virus to hell. ;)

I try to hit the gym. Sweaty session on the stair master to sweat it out

A cold will usually last three days.

Take whatever you like; pay for hyped cures, drink Scotch or Bourbon and hot lemon. Go to bed, wrap up warm, drink plenty of liquid...

A cold will usually last three days.

The Scotch or Bourbon might help you endure the three days.

Zinc acetate and zinc gluconate have been shown to shorten the duration of colds. Lozenge form is more effective than syrup. They are most effective when citric acid isn't present, so lay off the oranges.

I tried the Zicam stuff a few times, but it always seemed to make me nauseous. So I just treat symptoms if they get bad; headache or runny nose etc. Otherwise I just try to drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated and make sure to eat well. I try to stay away from dairy since it gums me up worse. Sometimes spicy food helps a bit. Stay home if you can so you don't spread it, but I know for many folks that just not really an option. Sneeze into tissues and throw away, and wash your hands often. Not much else you can do.

This Jewish guy I knew in college never blew his nose. He said the snot was in there to keep germs out...but he always had snot hanging out of his really huge nose.

The only thing that works? Never leave the house and never let anyone in. And don't breath in. Never breath in.

Most people don't take nearly enough vitamin C for it to be effective. The Vitamin C Foundation recommends a minimum of 3 grams a day. And that's if you're healthy.

Hot, sweet tea. Sweetened with honey is best, but even regular sugar helps soothe the throat and the steam from the heat keeps me decongested.

And it's liquid. They say that's good.

I always just drink a lot (of light fluids, such as Sprite/Sierra Mist or juices or Milk) and eating a lot (if you can keep it down, such as soup or ice cream.) Ice Cream is especially good for sore throats. Also, when I have a cold I use cough drops. But especially it's good to keep myself hydrated.

Suffer.

You will anyway, so expect and endure it.

That's life.

Zinc gluconate lozenges regularly for 3-5 days at the first sign of a cold. They're best after at least a good snack, otherwise they can cause serious nausea. Fair warning, they temporarily kill your taste buds.

I also drink tons of herbal tea, take ester-C and use local raw honey during cold season.

The zinc is the most reliable of anything I've tried, however. If I'm strict about taking the lozenges, the cold rarely progresses beyond the initial sore throat and/or stuffy nose.

cold-eeze at the first sign. Also take them when I'm flying or other places I'm packed in with people.

Also lots of garlic, but that's mostly because I just like garlic.

Don't know how to prevent it, but I do know that a few shots of bourbon and an extended sauna will kick the shit out of a cold.
