I had an epiphany a couple of weeks ago.

I had 5 days off and no real plans, so I decided to dig into my house and really clean. I found stuff that I'd bought over the course of the last several months, still in the bags, still price tagged. Things I'd forgotten that I'd bought and I had no reason for purchasing in the first place.

It occured to me that I'd been one of those people who shopped compulsively. I think it was a manifestation of some kind of depression, although I kept telling people that I wasn't really depressed... that I felt great.

Looking back on this, I must've been depressed and just didn't realize it.

Sigh...this is something I'm very familiar with. Pretty common for the depressed person to shop as a way to comfort themselves. But the purchase only provides a short lived hug and then you're on to the next thing. This totally explains the quantity of shoes in my closet...and hair products...and lingerie. Chrissakes...I need a support group.

sigh

I'm not normally depressed, or so I thought. I have blue days, now and then but nothing that was consistant. At least I never thought so until I found all those bags of stuff...lol. And it's been a couple of months since I made all these purchases so I think it was a transient thing, but finding this stuff sure made me pause to think.

I love certain things... I bet I have 50 watches and more purses than PayLess. ;-) But those are things I just like. The stuff I found that I had bought... incense and burners, candles, keychains... LOL just shit, plain and simple that I already had or had no need of. It was a real eye-opener that day.

ah...right. I don't tend to buy the 'stuff'. All of my shopping is for things I like and will use. I just have lots and lots of the things I like.

i for one am a firm believer in shopping therapy... as long as my wallet can hold out. i know its a bad habbit, but i bought my favorite corset as part of a make-me-feel-better shopping spree, so i cant regret it that much.

When I find myself pantie/bra shopping at the mall or dress shopping at a thrift store I know I am moving into a round of depression. I have more lace undies than I'll ever use and have no reason for more. But at times I don't think I have any power or control over events in my life I go fem shopping as a way to say "I can do this, so there!"

For me, shopping really isn't a sign of depression, I'm just really really vain and only like wearing matching underwear. I buy expensive stuff, and little of it, rather than lots of cheap stuff. It seems to work for me. Mostly I only get depressed when I have no money and can't go shopping. This probably makes me a bad person, but it also makes me a well groomed one, and out here, that's crucial.

And Lord knows, being well dressed and well groomed is tantamount... for you and me and Shank, too, I suspect. ;-)

I love to shop when I'm happy. I love shopping for things I like and want. But I noticed a difference when I opened those old bags in the closet. That kind of shopping was nothing like my "happy shopping". That stuff was just... stuff. LOL Needless stuff.

I guess though that if I'm depressed, shopping is better for me than eating would be.

Yes, that's a big concern for me, too. ;-)

I have much the same habbit. It's terrible, and one I really can't afford. I realized something when I had a long weekend and started into the closets. The bigest reason for me being so depressed is the mess my apt is in. I'm still cleaning and sorting things out from when I lived here with my ex 18 months ago, from when my ex lived here alone a year ago, and from when my cousin lived here with me 8 months ago. I'm finding things I bought when we first got married, things he bought when I left, things my cousin and I bought together, and things that I have bought before and after they each left. I realized the junk is really what's getting to me and so I've been trying to tackle it one room/closet at a time. The more rooms that get set up the happier I am and the less I shop, so atleast it's a start in the right direction.

Boots

I just bought another pair of black boots. Now ya'll know a Domme always has black boots, so my black boot count is up to 4 or 5 I forgot. I have two pair I have never worn.

LOL

Shopping or eating; both can be equally dangerous!

I am officially jealous! My cat got locked in the closet recently and peed on my favorite butch pair - nothing I do seems to get out the smell :(

As to shopping, not much for clothes, but get me into a book or music store and I will not be able to leave without at least spending $100 or so... I have so many books that I haven't had time to delve into yet - at least I DO listen to all of the music.

Oddly enough I've been shopping for a closet too. Literally, as in, I don't have a closet.

But do you already have a cat to lock in it by mistake? ;)

I rarely shop now. Once upon a time I was encouraged to be a fashion plate and did a good bit of clothes shopping. Even then I looked for bargains.

I used to browse antique / junk stores and shop more in general when I had more time and disposable income.

The one time in my life when I shopped due to emotional upset was when my baby girl had to be gone with my ex. I'd shop garage sales to deal with the worry and guilt, buying her toys and things. I didn't have that much money then but garage sales are cheep. I'm a thrifty girl in general.

There is a dry cleaning store up the street behind the Safeway at Market and Church that can get cat piss out of leather. I know and my black leather bed comforter is better for it.

At least your cat only peed on them! Mine clawed all over the toes. Piles and piles of shoe polish have made them passable in public, but you can still see the dents all over them, and the shoe repair shops have told me there's nothing they can do.

And I absolutely cannot find another pair I like as much. I've already had to glue the sole back onto one of them.

LOL...exactly what I was thinking! I was also thinking that a black leather comforter would be completely impractical in my house... kids, cat, dog, me.

Goddess, I know what you mean! When you get a pair you like in that way, it's so hard to give them up. I know I'm not going to be able to find a replacement for these easily. I'm glad that you were able to at least make yours passible!

Shank, thank you! I hope that the repair shop is still there. I will look for it next week when I am off. If they can get cat pee scent out of your leather comforter (woo hoo!), I have no doubt that they'll be able to get them out of my boots. Question - when you say behind - in that shopping complex or on the street behind? Or on Church itself?

yes, i know what you mean, and in more ways than one ;)

oh, is this what prompted your latest set of pics??? inquiring minds...

I tend to use my professional development as a bad excuse for overspending.

When I was running sessions, it justified the SM gear. Now that I am designing jewelry, my house is teeming with beads, gems, silver wire.

I will figure this balance out eventually. But I don't think I'm alone and yeah, when stressed it gets less realistic and appropriate.
