When i took a teaching job at Meadowlark High School i had no idea what i was getting myself into. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. I would frequently go down to Wrigley Field and watch the Cubbies lose game after game, then go for a bite to eat at the many local establishments. When i finally graduated from college i was just happy to get a teaching job anywhere. It didnt matter where it was, i just wanted a job.
Welcome to Meadowlark, Il. Population 879. make that 880 with my arrival. Im surprised the town even had a high school but it did...only 210 kids (surrounding areas sent their kids to meadowlark hS.
Anyways, moving the story along. Living off a teacher's salary is near impossible. I decided to help out my income by coaching some sports at Meadowlark. I was an asst. JV football coach. It was pretty fun, we didnt win many games, but it was easy work, and also good for buidling up my coaching resume. After the football season i wanted to coach basketball since that was my favorite sport. However, all the boys coaching jobs were taken and it looked like i was SOL. The Athletic Director told me that there is a Asst. Varsity Girls basketball position open and its mine if i wanted it. Of course i jumped at the chance to help coach the girls..not for the obvious reasons lol, but financially.
A stroke of good luck swung my way when the Head Girls Coach quit coaching so she could spend more time witih her elderly mother. The AD offered the job to me since the JV coach didnt want the stress and pressure of a Varsity position. I stil ask myself to this day, what stress and pressures are you goign to feel with a Girls team in a small town where they dont care much about sports? Anyways, im glad the JV coach passed.
The only thing that was on my mind was how am i going to do this all alone? We will soon find out i guess.
