Cleaning up inbox and deleting old conversations

I'm trying to clean out my inbox of old messages, particularly the ones from angry trolls. Is there a way to do this? I can select them, but there does not seem to be an option for "Delete." Are we stuck with the "Hey Shithead...." type of messages cluttering out inbox forever? (Even those of us who seriously try not to be a shithead? I do apologize if I ever come across like that by the way.)
