I pose to those of you who have an interest/love of classical music the following tired old question: If you were to spend the rest of you life on a deserted island and could only bring 10 pieces of classical music with you, what would they be?

for myself I chose the following (This list was off the top of my head, and took perhaps 15 minutes to compile):

Tannhauser –Overture by Richard Wagner

3rd Symphony – L. v Beethoven

Finlandia – J. Sibelius

Gadfly Suite , Romance - Shostakovich

Marche funebre: Lento – F. Chopin

Toccata in D minor – J.S. Bach

Adagio - Albinoni

Montagues and Capulets – Prokoviev

Adagio for Strings – S. Barber

Fur Elise – L.v. Beethoven

I'm not too much a fan of classic but some things I like. How about
- Oh Fortuna - Wagner (I guess)
- Ode To Joy
- Some things from 'Pictures of an exhibition'

Before deciding on the musical pieces, I need to know how good a stereo system happened to get dropped on this island also.

Johannes Ockeghem: Requiem

Josquin Des Prez: Missa L'Homme Armé

Palestrina: Missa Papae Marcelli

Lassus: Seven Penitential Psalms

J.S. Bach: The Art of Fugue

J.S. Bach: A Musical Offering

Beethoven: 9th Symphony

Beethoven: The Late Quartets (If these five count as separate pieces, then No. 13, Opus 130, including the Grosse Fuge)

Berlioz: Harold in Italy

Berlioz: Requiem

Canon from "Les Brigandes" Act 2, Offenbach

Elgar Cello concerto 1st Movement (Jaqueline Du Pres, Barbirolli)

Concierto Andaluz for Four Guitars and Orchestra (1st Movement) - Joaquin Rodrigo

Entract to Act 2 of Robinson Crusoe - Offenbach

Symphony No 6, Beethoven

Concerto for flute and harp - Mozart

Harp concerto - Boieldiue

"La Belle Inez fait flores " from Le Domino Noir - Auber

Le Caliph de Bagdad - ouverture - Boieldiue

Lee Fees du Rhine - ouverture - Offenbach

Don't be silly. You get an entire Philharmonic Orchestra for company.

There is no electricity on a desert island so this is a must!! I think Swiss Family Robinson had one.

pththt.. this geek would find a way to make eletricity. As long as it isn't a dessert island, I might even be able to pull it off.

Like the Philharmonic Orchestra idea. Just have to figure out where to put the pipe organ.

As for music:

Beethoven - 5th & 9th Symphonies

Saint-Saens - Organ Symphony #3 in Cm

Bach - Tocatta and Fugue in D minor

Vivaldi - Four Seasons

Handel - Messiah

Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture

Rossini - William Tell

Grieg - Peer Gynt

Mozart - Eine kleine Nachtmusik

I will also want sheet music and my cello so I can play along when the mood strikes.

Well, then, be sure to pack it on every trip you take then, to be prepared.

There's always room for cello.

--------------------------------

Now, back to the matter at hand:

Beethoven: 5th, 6th and 9th Symphonies; Für Elise and Leanora Overature #3.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade

Bach: Brandenburg Concerti, Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor.

John Bull: Rondo in G

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake, Nutcracker, 6th Symphony

Mendelssohn: Midsummer Night's Dream

Gustav Holst: The Planets, St. Paul Suite

Handel: Water Music

Wagner: Act III Prelude Lohengrin, Ride of the Valkyries

Brahms: Academic Overature

Debussy: Claire de Lune (a.k.a. "Clear Da Saloon")

Strauss: Tales From The Vienna Woods

----------------

It is very difficult to make such a Lizst.

Rossini- Barber of Seville, Thieving Magpie, William Tell

Beethoven 9th- 4th movement

Mozart- Nachtmusic, the last act of " Figaro" The Magic Flute"

After that it doesnt matter much...
Possibly The Nutcracker Suite, The Saber Dance..Peter and The Wolf ( is that classical?)...

Why not the whole symphony?

Secretly, the 1st movement is the best

That's true
I guess I just listen to the 4th movement more than the rest
very well then...i'll change that to the Whole 9th
thanks
;)

Carl Orff - Camina Burana

Bach - Brandenburg Concerts

Mozart - Magic Flute

Mozart - Alla Turka

Schumann - Kinderträume

Beethoven - Violin Sonatas 1-3; 5th-9th symphonie

Verdi - La Traviata

Nyman - The heart seeks pleasure first

Puccini - Tosca

Grieg - Per Gynt Suite

5th through the 9th or 5th and the 9th?

There is something to be said for the 7th but I can live without the 8th. I like the 4th, too, for some reason.

IMHO, the 6th demonstrates the turmoil in Beethoven's soul and yet shows his playfulness at the same time,

Also IMHO, the 9th is arguably the best piece of music ever written.

Beethoven's 5th

Orff - Carmina Burana

Mozart - Eine Kleine Nachtmuzik

J. S. Bach - Tocatta and Fugue in D-

Debussy - Claire de Lune

Aaron Copland - Appalachian Spring

Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue

Leonard Bernstein - West Side Story

Handel - Water Music

The tenth spot is open for suggestions...

i like to listen to them - from the 4th to the 9th straight through... it gives me a certain kick. don't know why, it just does.

Cool!

I've been known to put all the symphonies into the CD rack and let 'em rip, too. Beethoven is my fave, no doubt, followed closely by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn.

being austrian i'm of course partial to mozart. i don't know how often i've already seen the magic flute, or the serail, but i just can listen to it over and over again.
same goes for alla turka and eine kleine nachtmusik.

I went to a wedding, very nice, very intimate and the decorating was tasteful.
Everyone was seated.
The prelude music was hushed.
People turned to the rear of the church in expectation.
The doors opened and the music began:

Adagio - Albinoni

For that brief instant I thought...this is the nicest funeral I've ever been to.
