Sam Albrecht pulled out his legal pad, a list making habit he had from his college days and began to work through notes for his syllabus. While the document was self-explanatory, invariably, there were a number of students that were unfamiliar with the format, or even the idea that there was a greater plan for their year. He’d taken classes that followed the “review the book” format, but Sam was much more detailed in his planning. Half the handouts would end up lining the trash cans outside his classroom, but for those interested, it was worth the trouble. He owed it to them.
Sam went through the list systematically, mindful that he could never anticipate anyone’s knowledge base, let alone their class. It was a rude awakening for Freshman, who took his advanced literature course, there were prerequisites, but they could be satisfied by advanced work as Seniors. Unfortunately, this was a broad brush with which to paint all graduating high school students. Of the 100 students he saw in the class over the 2 semesters, only 3-4 freshman made it to finals.
He looked the part of a professor, to his own mind. His glasses were contemporary, only for reading, and they held his wavy hair back when not in use. Once jet black, his hair had matured to streaks of grey. He was not vain enough to alter it, there was something to be honored in the years he had spent teaching, and the look underscored his scholastic aptitude. He hadn’t turned 40, only 18 months until the milestone was reached and overrun.
Classes would not begin for another week, but he had gotten himself in the habit of holding office hours in his class the week prior. It kept him focused on his classes, and got him back into his routine.

Sam worked diligently on his notes, worked through them for the 3rd time before pulling out his laptop and inserting the lines into the class format. He might be old school when it came to pen and paper, it just appealed to him more. Sam finished and pushed the screen of the laptop closed, ready to head out the door for the day.
