Civil Marriage in England (writer's question)

Just what is the procedure for a civil wedding ceremony in England? From what I ave read in fiction, the couple gets together at a government office called a Marriage Registry, buys a license and a government official performs the marriage ceremony, which is very quick. Is this correct?

The ceremonies can be as long or as short as you want them to be but must NOT include a religious element while the Registrar is present. The shortest version can be about five minutes.

The minimum cost for a marriage at a registry office is £73.50.
