Cigar Smokers

Hoyo de Monterrey, any size, in a maduro wrapper. Mmmmmm..... might have to smoke one on the veranda tonight.

I like to keep a variety in my humidor. Different sizes for different occasions, depending on how much time I have. I like a Churchill, 45 to 50 ring size, 7 or 8 inches. I keep a few shorter ones for a quicker smoke.

One brand that has always satisfied is Puros Indios. They are middle priced Honduran cigar maker. Joya de Nicaragua are also a good value.

If you try really hard, you can spend a lot of money on cigars. You end up paying more for name and mystique than the smoke. In the past couple years I have been very happy with $4 to $5 cigars, but just about any $10 cigar is a better deal than a $15 chocolate martini.

I agree about not going overboard on price. I generally buy in bulk, and won't go over $2 per stick for a bundle. I'll go up to $5 on an individual cigar at a shop. Any more than that, and you are paying for the name.

Agree wholeheartedly. Churchill is nice, sometimes a Double Corona or Torpedo. Nice hour-long relaxing smoke.

Then there's the '50 packs' of daily smokes, something for $1-$2 a stick. Add in the occasional 'good' cigar for entertaining. Something light, like an Ashton, does the trick.

Puros Indios - very nice, great price, unfortunately around her a little limited selection at the three places I go. And a little above my base price for buying by the box.

Truth is, when people know you're a cigar smoker, you get cigars as gifts a lot (soft of like being a golfer), so I always have a very weird selection of cigars in my humidors.

Garcia y Vega Minatures thank you very much.

Bundles can be a very good deal. There's no point in paying for a wooden box.

I don't mind cigar gifts. People often repay favors with a handful that were recommended by the guy in the tobacco shop.

My second wife's (the Madwoman) grandfather had been a life long cigar smoker until he was 65. The family still gave him a box of El Trelles Triangles for Christmas. He just put them in the freezer and one Christmas he gave me a dozen boxes because they were out of room. He said he had quit smoking 20 years before. In the day, these were 25 cent cigars. All were in good shape and smoked well.

There are good smokes available for $1, these days. Machine made cigars that are really big cigarettes don't have to be vile. I avoid anything with a flavor added or a tip. Plastic or wooden tip are put on cheap cigars because they melt when wet. Cigars are flavored to cover up the worst smelling tobacco.

What is your favorite cigar?

Punch, Fuentes, and Rosa_Linda....I don't know if Rosa_Linda is still made - it's a mild Cubano that I was able to procure through some folks @ Gitmo...........If $$$ are a problem, Fuente curly heads are a damned good value for a cigar under $3......I also like some of the bundles that JR Cigar sells: the Trinidad & Cia brand features a good smoke around a buck'a stick............
I prefer Remy Martin 2.0 but any good (it doesn't have to be EXCELLENT!) cognac will provide a viable counterpoint to the richness that the good smoke offers.....of course, I've done ok with Wild Turkey on a campout!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another vote for JR Cigar - that's where I get all my stogies. Their "alternatives" to name brand smokes are excellent. Not only are they indistinguishable from their name brand counterparts, I suspect they are identical except for the labels.

Best cigar I've ever had was a Cuban Ramon Allones Specially Selected, which I bought at Harrods on a visit to London 14 years ago. I think it cost me 14 pounds back then. Shared it with two lady friends at an Italian restaurant back when you could still smoke indoors in England.

I like a variety of cigars, mostly the old standards (Hoyo de Monterrey, Romeo y Julieta, Punch) as well as some of the newer lines (La Gloria Cubana & Padron). A few months ago, for a special family get-together, I broke open a box of LGC Torpedoes that I've had stashed away in my bulk humidor for the past 10+ years. Very smooth.

Now I smoke whatever is reasonable, in a double corona/toro size or larger. Hard to find a good $1 cigar nowadays, even from JR; with the new taxes, it seems like the lowest price you can find on a hand rolled is $2 per stick. JR is running a "30 Days of Total Insanity" sale this month. Haven't bit on any of them, yet.

I have been smoking cigars since 1978. Since then, my taste has changed considerably. I used to prefer Macanudo or Pleaides, but several years later I found that Arturo Fuente cigars were better made, cheaper, and tasted better.

Presently, my favorite cigar is the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series. I will smoke any size of that cigar. I know it's over priced, but it's the most enjoyable smoke I have experienced that does not require traveling out of the country. I will buy one or two of these for special occasions, only.

I keep my humidor stocked with an assortment of cigars, including Excalibur No. III, Partagas Black Piramide, Montecristo Afrique Jambo Jambo, TTT Trinidad Robusto, and Sosa No. 2 (when I can find it). I also have a few massive Cuba Aliados with a ring gauge around 64, I think. I reserve those for the golf course, where a 2-3 hour smoke is not unreasonable.

There is an 81 year old Cuban man across the street who rolls cigars in his garage every day for an hour or two. I buy a box or two from him every year, but I give most of those away. They are well made, but a little mild for my taste.

I just wanted to add, there is nothing sexier than a hot woman smoking a cigar!
