Hi CHYOOsters,

Time for my second official post in almost 3 years. To the long-suffering members of CHYOO, the powers behind Literotica have deemed it time for an updated version of CHYOO... CHYOO 3. This version, like version 2, will be a complete rewrite and offer many new features that will make it more fun and addictive than ever before. Moderators will also get new tools to allow them to administrate the site briskly and effectively.

What I'm asking for from the members of this forum is feedback for CHYOO 2, your likes and gripes, as well as suggestions for version 3. Hopefully, we can kickstart a discussion on worthwhile new features. All comments are welcome, and all suggestions will be considered.

Thanks for making CHYOO what it is today.

On the surface this sounds like an awesome idea. The Chyoo Site Feedback contains a number of good threads talking about what would be great to change. Just move back a year or so and there is a lot of information we all put time into posting.

Also could you give us a little background on how you fit into the picture? None of the regulars around here have any idea what Chyoo is all about, who the owners are, or what they would like the site to become.

We all crave a little information...Maybe you could enlighten us a bit?

Yeah, an updated Chyoo would be fantastic... but... um... who are you again? I think we're all feeling kind of confused because we don't speak much with the administrators or anyone related the web aspect of Chyoo.

I'm assuming you'll be the one building the new Chyoo and you're looking for suggestions for new features though, so here's mine. Make sure to link Chyoo 3 to this message board! We've been an isolated community for years now because a lot of the members don't even know that this message board exists. If the site were designed to encourage community interaction, I'm sure it would thrive. For that matter, maybe a feedback section for each story so people can post thoughts on the overall story rather than just on a particular thread in the story. Not just for feedback too, it could be a place where writers and editors could discuss story direction and story details. The current notes in stories don't work aren't as communicative as they could be.

Great ideas from Artican.

I think that writers should have the option of displaying their notes on the same page as their threads. That way, they'll be easily visible, and they can be hidden if they include spoilers. I wouldn't have to click "add thread" just to see if the writer had some ideas for continuing the plot.

You should be able to delete threads. Give members the option of deleting just a single thread or all threads following it. If there are threads following that belong to writers besides the editor, then maybe their permission would be required.

Chyoo looks too plain. Even a dash of color would make it more appealing.

You should be allowed to leave your name (with link to profile) when making comments.

I keep telling myself I ought to write or commission some add-on Cascading Style Sheet for Chyoo to add some color and highlighting. Some browsers let you attach your own CSS for a particular site. Anyone suggest a good example to steal?

Thanks for posting that, Zingiber. And I'll letcha know if something catches my eye some time.

Here is an idea... make the development of CHYOO 3 open source... that way you can get the CHYOO community who know how to code enlisted to not only release v3, but to continue ongoing development as new feature ideas arise in the forums.

This reminds me of (maybe it is) a problem I have with some stories I've added threads to.

I write threads, & then I usually leave thhem alone for a while b/c I try to develop each next thread in my head before I write it (as I think NE1 should). But some others write threads, & add them to mine, that don't connect. (For instance, they add/subtract things/people from rooms, & go on like those things were/weren't there before.)

I have no problem working with someone (switch-off, etc.) to continue from my threads, but when they make such drastic changes, I can't do anything with the driection I was sending things, or anything @ all (in fact) with what I wrote previously.

Not being an editor, I can't delete their thread. Even if I like what they wrote, but need to make aforementioned changes, I also cannot do that.

I'd also like to see more customized names similar to the {FIRST_NAME} vein. There could be one for female and male at the very least. Plus, it'd be nice to have an option in your profile to fill in the names automatically with names of your choosing so you don't have to enter it every time you read a new story.

Make sure the update stat works. It needs to show when the last thread or edit took place, not when the last comment occured. Also, a "last editor login" stat would be good, too, so that if I want to add to an old story, I know that the editor is actually alive and still participating in Chyoo. No one wants their threads dangling in purgatory, right?

As far as the {FIRST_NAME} variable goes... why not make it dynamic, so that advanced creators of stories have the ability to create new variables on the fly.

As I create a story, I could add a new variable 'GIRLS_HAIR_COLOR', with a little description 'Hair Color For The Leading Lady:', then you would get prompted to enter text for that variable. The Story creator could also enter the default value ('blonde').

You could make it more advanced if you pleased, such that certain variable choices caused the story to start with a particular thread. It would shorten considerably those stories which the first handfull of threads are just for determining where the story starts (i.e. what is your sex? how old are you?)

One idea I had was to show the number of threads that proceed the choice/thread you are about to choose.

Or at the least mark which thread choice is the 'longest'. Sort of like breadcrumbs being left for the reader, to guide them towards the most established path of your story.

Yaknow, as an author/creator of stories, it would be very interesting to see something slightly different... which would be the popularity of a certain thread path.... while path 1-2-4-1-2-1 might be the longest, path 1-2-1-1-2 might be the most popular. So as you see the choices at the bottom, it would be interesting to know which choice will continue me down the longest path, and which choice would take me down the most popular path.

a new thread section..that just show you new threads..sometime it hard to find the new sones if the story has a lot of link. Also sometime the stories get top simply from reviews

Also you can subcribe to a story..so when ever it updated you know

Just one suggestion; when you're done and Chyoo 3 is up and running, make one of the "old men" from the forum (the ones who are still active and with something like 700+ posts) able to edit the site, posting updates etc.
It isn't exactly appealing when one visits Chyoo for the first time and the first thing one see is that it was last updated July 4th, 2004.
And of course, post a link to this forum.

Another idea I had was to take some hints from the old text adventure games like Zork and the like... which if you think about it is very close in context to a choose your own website like CHYOO....

The idea would be to have not only a thread and a continuing question, but for some 'scene' information to come along for the ride. Names of important people or objects in the room, time of day, location description, etc. It would make adding new threads a hell of a lot easier as it could be used to maintain continuity for the story.

I don't envision this as being extremely sophisticated.... a thread author would have the ability to edit another text box which would be the scene info, but it should default to be the same info as on the parent thread.

Yaknow, as I was using CHYOO tonight I thought that Feedback to threads should *NOT* default to anonymous. 80% of the feedback in my bin has the originator's name tagged on the end. Leave anonyminity as an option for lurkers, I guess... but default to open feedback.

It would be nice to be able to see this feedback underneath of the thread itself. Any allow story creators to be able to make this feedback open to the public.

If the front page news were kept and could be displayed with a click on the Past News link, you'd preserve a lot of the history of the site. Having moderators able to edit it would be grand. Having moderators able to create forum sticky topics and such would be great too.

Allow editors to override the thread limit, even above the 4 maximum, would be great. It currently can be done with some web fudging, but it's dangerous. I deleted a story testing it out. I still haven't recovered it.

"Statistics, damn statistics, and lies:" I'd like a running total of stories and threads created/approved/denied/deleted/modified today/this week/month/year. Threads rated counts. views today, this week, etc.

Setic, I can't stress enough the importance of having more than just you as a site developer. The fact that this site is only touched once every three years is a problem. Allow a moderator or group of moderators to control minor updates to the site.

It is obvious you have a lot of passionate fans that love the site, allow them to help maintain it.

One other thing. The 'top stories' for the site often only have a single vote of 5.0

To determine top story, you need to change the formula to be:

Average Rating * Number of votes = Rating

Sort by this rating, not by average rating.

I think it'd be great to fix it where simple viewing of a story brings it to the "NEW" list or whatever... A story should have to be added to.

OK, viewing a thread doesn't make a story New, but Rating or Commenting on a thread does. One should either have to add a new thread or substantially edit an existing thread.

I've posted it elsewhere, but would it be possible to search stories belonging to specific non-English languages ? Currently, among 221 "non-English" stories, 8 are in French, one is in a language I honestly don't recognize, and the rest are in German. (Well, that was more or less it last time I looked.) Would it be possible to :
- Either remove the "non-English" section altogether, put all the stories of this category in the category they should fit in, and add a "language" list to pick when you've just written a thread or a new story. (With English being the default, of course) Also add the option, in advanced searches, to only get It would then allow people to write and search for, say, fantasy and sci-fi stories in Swahili.
- Or just add a German-only section. Of course, it would mean that in a few years, people will complain that there's too much French in the non-English-and-German section. ;)

And I second the plead about "anonymous" not being the default setting when sending feedback. I now understand why I'm not receiving answers for the feedback I've written !

My third question would be more about security. Right now, there is no disclaimer, and no "You must be 18 to see this website." I'm not sure whether that's mandatory by the laws of whichever place Chyoo comes from, but wouldn't that be safer ? Another thing to do would be to list somewhere, and I mean somewhere visible (there is something about that in the FAQ, but nobody really looked sure about it) what is allowed and unallowed in stories. (things like bestiality, underage characters, rape, and snuff...)

Thanks !
