As I sit here looking at the small pile of gifts piled around the tree I remember Christmases Past. Yes I remember those with my family with a mound of gifts under the tree. Then I remember those when I was in High School. Then I remember one that truly blew my mind.
I was 18 and had been dating a young lady my age. The fact that she was a hell of a lot better looking than me, not to mention a six foot tall redhead didn't bother me. (So I only stand five foot six.)
Even though she was Jewish I had bought her a gift. Nothing special mind you just a little something. I had bought a thin band with a small diamond on it. A solitair if you will. I had it in my pocket when I picked her up on Christmas Eve and we headed out for a couple of days off.
It was 1984 and I had a 1972 BMW Motorcycle. I picked her up in the morning for a trip to the Black Forest. (My parents and brother were spending the holidays in the U.S.) It was cold and it was snowing as we pulled into a small Gasthouse where I had reserved rooms. Mikki seemed to sense something was different because she went into the bathroom to change out of her riding clothes into a robe. Once we were properly attired we went outside to the hot tub. (A rather large affair fed by hot springs.) The sun was going down as we slifd into the water, both of us wearing nothing more than we had been born in. The sight of her took my breath away as it usually did. Gods but she was beautiful.
We splashed around in the pool for a bit soaking the cold out of our bones before I slid away and over to my robe. Digging through the pockets I found the ring and slipped it on my finger before heading back for her. When I reached her I grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the steps to the pool. She faught with me as I pulled her into the snow and told her to stand there. She wanted to know why I had pulled her out of the cold water to stand there completely exposed to the elements and everyone looking on. As she tried to argue with me I knelt down in the snow and held her hands.
"Mikki," I told her. "I know this holiday doesn't hold a lot of meaning for you but I want to change that. Will you marry me?" As I said this I slipped the ring off my finger and slipped it onto hers.
Mikki sttod there shivering in the cold as she looked down at her finger and then at me. What a glorious sight she was with her thin and fit frame standing in the snow. Slowly a smile spread across her face as she realized what I ahd asked her. Her eyes teare up as she pulled me to my feet and hugged me as she said yes. The people in the pool laughed and clapped as she led me back into the hot water of the pool to defrost from our time in the chill air and snow. Her hands never left me as we sat and talked and played a little. The people who had been in the pool came over and congratulated us as the pool slowly emptied of people. Before I knew it someone had shut off the lights and Mikki and I made waves in the pool. Eventually we climbed out, dried off and pulled on our robes before making our way back to our room.
The next morning we were laying in the bed covered by a thick and heavy comforter against the cold when we heard a knock at the door. I crawled out from under the covers and pulled on robe as Mikki laughed at me. When I opened the door I found a cart loaded with foods and a Carafe of Hot Coffee. When we finally came down from the room we were greeted by the owner of the Gasthouse and his wife. They had a couple of wrapped gifts for us. Inside each of the boxes was a heavy double knit sweater. They told us these were their gifts for our wedding.
We spent the next week in the area and it seems the word of our betrothal had spread. Everywhere we went we were given small gifts. It was one of the best Christmases I have ever had.
So what is your best Christmas Memmory(sp)?
