I work for a large retail chain where, out of necessity, I've been listening to Christmas music nonstop for about three weeks now.

The thing is, I kind of like it.

Of course, it helps that they have a great mix of music to choose from; everything from Bing and Satchmo to Cyndi Lauper singing the "Christmas Conga". It's also interesting how certain songs are usually associated with particular singers (not just "White Christmas" and Bing, btw).

One example for me is "Home for the Holidays". It's a great holiday tune - one of my favorites - but for me, it will always be associated with Perry Como, because that's the version I grew up listening to.

What about you? What's your favorite holiday music and why?

I get out Mannheim Steamroller's orig Christmas cd every year and play it in my car for about a month straight, rotating it with Amy Grant's first Christmas album. That reminds me, time to get the CDs out!

My favorite Christmas music is still the caroles though- Angels We have Heard on High, Joy to the World, Oh Come All ye Faithful, Silent Night, etc. Those are the true Christmas songs and they are the ones I love most in either church/organ versions or snazzy Mannheim Steamroller versions. You'll see me singing in my car at this time of year more than any other.

George Michael's Last Christmas comes to my mind. Or was it Wham! Must be the teen years' influence. :D

Does Rob Zombie have a Christmas album yet?

i got a bunch of songs from the old Dr Demento radio shows from about 20 yrs ago that i still like to listen to.
and i cant forget to get the Chipmunks out either!
"want a plane that loops the loop, me i want a hoolahoop..."

LOL

No Xmas music until tomorrow, please. One holiday at a time!

Okay, BK. You're exempt for today, but I'll expect to see your favorites bright and early tomorrow. :)

My favorite is Carol of the Bells. I searched for many years to find just the right version.

Tom Lehrer: 'A Christmas Carol'

Christmas time is here by golly,
Disapproval would be folly,
Deck the halls with hunks of holly
Fill the glass and don't say when.

Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens,
Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens,
Even though the prospect sickens,
Brother, here we go again.

On Christmas day you can't get sore,
Your fellow man you must adore,
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four.
Relations, sharing no expense, I'll
Send some useless old utensil,
Or a matching pen and pencil,
("Just the thing I need! How nice!")
It doesn't matter how sincere it
Is, nor how heartfelt the spirit,
Sentiment will not endear it,
What's important is the price.

Hark the Heralt Tribune sings,
Advertising wonderous things,
God rest you merry merchant,
May you make the Yule Tide pay,
Angels we have heard on high,
Tell us to go out and buy!

So let the raucous sleighbells jingle,
Hail our dear old friend Kriss Kringle,
Driving his reindeer across the sky,
Don't stand underneath when they fly by.

:)

Mine is being loaded into the car cd player in about 15 minutes. Time to go sing and shop! :)

Have a fun day everyone!

I like hearing "Do they Know its Christmas time?" by Live aid

Its great hearing all the different musicians.

I love Christmas music, especially old world arrangements; madrigals and Victorian carols. My favorite cd the last few years, however, has been called something like "A Swinging Christmas" and is jazzier arrangements of traditional songs by groups like Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, etc. It's wonderful!

I really like the traditional songs sang by females in the country music genre. I also like the CD sampler set I have of jazz, pan flute and saxophone. Its perfect for when I'm decorating, baking, and wrapping presents.

I love christmas music, and i have been known to play it in summer!

Ok here is a very, very sad confession.

I love Cliff Richard.

No really, don't laugh, I do!

SO I listen to his christmas album...I love "mistletoe and wine"

Also a song called "grandma got run over by a reindeeer"

i dunno who its by..but it always makes me giggle!

"No don't laugh, it's cruel to mock the afflicted" - Frankie Howard.

(Sorry couldn't resist :) )

I love Cliff Richard.

Please be carelful, many people reckon Cliff Richard is gateway music to Des O'Connor.

I love all different types of Christmas music. My favorite traditional ones are: Carol of the Bells, What Child is This?, Handel's Messiah, Angels We Have Heard on High, and Silent Night (all choral).
I've sung all of these in my college and high school Chamber Singers groups.

My favorite contemporary ones are: Santa Baby, I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas, Winter Wonderland (Elvis version), Jingle Bell Rock, and Last Christmas.

I don't know why but I'm not familiar with Angels We Have Heard On High. However, I do notice that it has the same number of syllables as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, I wonder if it could be slightly diiferent lyrics to the same tune.

No, it's a different song entirely:
Angels We Have Heard on High

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.

Refrain

Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?

Refrain

Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Refrain

See Him in a manger laid,
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our hearts in love we raise.

Refrain

Doesit seem familiar at all now? The "gloria"s are really long...

If you like the Mannheim Steamroller christmas music, you'd love the Transiberian Orchestra as well....give it a try :)

Hey thanks!

I'll have to listen out for it over the Christmas period, it still hasn't clicked. I assume I must have listened to it on many occasions before, traditional hymns and carols are the same every year lol. I got a mental block I guess.

(I feel a bit of a hypocrite because I'm not religious but I still like the Christmas season).

You're welcome-I'm sure that once you hear it, you'll recognize it.

Don't feel like a hypocrite. I've never been to a church service except for weddings and baptisms. I still love Christmas music and many aspects of the holiday season though. It's more of a family thing than a religious holiday for me.
