I was lurking around the AH and saw a Christian writer's thread.

Sparked an idea.

How about a stories of living in faith and falling from grace?

Theme: man v. man

Lady gets saved and goes out to spread the word. She happens upon a young hood in a waiting room at a doctor's office. The young hood is nursing a gun shot wound, and is lucky to be alive, but doesn't feel very lucky.

The woman begins to witness to him. Being the thug boy that he is, he listens to figure out her game. Being hurt, he's pretty much out of his regular game, so he feels he could win points with his family by playing along with this lady.

The thug boy tells the woman that he will come to her church, but he would need a ride. She offers to come get him. She is determined to make him a good Christian. He tells her of some of the trails and tribulations of the mean streets and she proclaims that her Lord would concur all.

The thug boy likes the way the christians treat him, but he also notices the pride in the woman. He begins to see through the fog of hypocrisy. He continues his good behavior around the woman and doing deeds to further make the woman proud.

He finds out that the woman and other ladies from the church have regular bible study. He also notice the way the women steal glances at him and their eyes often drop to his crotch.

The thug offers to assist the woman with her bible meeting that was to be hosted at her home for the very first time. Her deed of bringing the thug out of the darkness had won her the opportunity to host the lady's bible study.

The thug plans to act as a waiter and to tempt the ladies with the lust he had seen in their hearts.

I saw a thread onetime on this board that talked about the people that join those clubs that pledge to remain virgins until marriage. I could see tons of different scenarios that play out with that theme. I'm sure you could find a bunch of other Christian themed ideas too.

Interesting idea....

I 'get' the basic idea, and it could be good if done very well. I think the problem I'd have in writing it is in unraveling the hypocrisy required for them to fall prey to temptation. Most christians I know are prideful, true, but they view temptation as something ever present, and always dangerous. The bottom line is that true believers would never give in and, if they did, they were spouting bullshit all along. The real question is whether they can admit it to themselves.

I think an interesting spin might be that the main female character doesn't have a christian background, didn't grow up in the faith, and is trying to conform perhaps to please a spouse. She has tasted the forbidden fruit in her past life, and knows how sweet it is. That way, the conflict is more tangible, both in her mind and in the mind of the reader.

Of course, me being me, I'd love to see the woman as a nun. That way the stakes would be even higher...

Just a few random thoughts...

Peace!

Flow, she is a newly born again christain. That plays to what you wrote. Giving her a dirty background. Maybe she turned because she got a dui in an accident or something simple, but did not get injured. She could have been involved in doing a lot of pleasuring of the flesh that she really enjoyed, but I would not make it the reason for her becoming born again. That would leave the door open. She would have never confronted those wicked ways, only that of surviving the accident that could have killed her.

Poe said that a short story must be able to be read at one sitting, so I would put a 4000 word max on it.

But they are spouting bullshit.

The basic message of all churches (not just the Christians) is the priesthood saying "Give us your money now, and we will see to it that you get a better life after you are dead."

How anyone ever falls for a message like that, I do not understand.

Man has this fear of death. What they what is a chance of life after death. Everlasting life, as its put.

If I were writing this one, I'd explore the messiah complex a bit--women of religious faith being attracted to men who are in a similar social role to Christ--outcast by society and seemingly doomed to die at a young age.

Sometime I'm going to get around to writing a nun story based around that--problem is I know nothing about the catholic church, I just think that nuns are sexy.

Do a little research, might add credibility to your story.
