I am finding it harder and harder to find shows that I enjoy on cable so I have been watching NetFlix a lot more lately. I watched Marco Polo which I loved but it was only 2 seasons long so did not take long to finish it. I believe it did not make it past 2 seasons for political reasons. Marco Polo led me to "Rise of the Phoenixs" which is a Chinese TV drama. It was my first exposure to a Chinese Drama and though I hate reading subtitles, I got hooked on the show. Amazing production values for a TV show, at least to me.

Was wondering if anybody else had seen this show and if could recommend any shows like it since I am nearing the end of the show?

I can recommend plenty of subtitled foreign films but no idea on Chinese tv drama’s...

I have googled and found a couple of potential new shows to watch but what has struck me in the drama is how so different it is from the normal happy ending of most western movies. I personally don't understand how anybody can get satisfaction from a story where it ends in tragedy. like this drama does. I loved the unfolding love story, the ebb and flow of their relationship, the growth of their love.

I need to introduce you to Spanish films... I much prefer films without a contrived fairy tale ending...

You would probably like the Rise of the phoenixs then since it is definitely not a fairy tale ending, much more of a tragic Romeo and Juliet tragic ending. I am much more of a helpless romantic wanting the live happily ever after ending.

I've watched lots of chinese dramas with my chinese mother-in-law. Amazing cinematography. The sadness involved can be overwhelming. I use amazon prime to stream them.

Any recommendations of shows that you really like? I am almost done with this show so will be looking for something new soon.

I don't know why they have to be so sad. Does your MIL enjoy the sadness? Is that something preferred within Chinese culture?

Ruyi's royal love in the palace - better find the tissues for the ending
Desperate love -
Chronicle of love -
The duke of mount deer - has some funny parts
Nothing gold can stay - the first one to really hook me in
Love in han yuan - spy movie set during world war
Empresses in the palace -

The overwhelming lesson in most of these is that women are vicious

Most of these are loosely based on history. Everyone dies eventually. They do tend to push the inner turmoil and some of it becomes cliche after a while. I and my MIL have an understanding that when we start a new series, neither can jump ahead. We only watch together.

I have not had a chance to look but are all of these on NetFlix or some other place?

I also have to say that I now hate Chinese dramas. lol. I finished watching Rise of the Phoenixs last night and that ending was tragic. I got invested in the characters and the unfolding love story over 70 episodes to only have it come to an tragic ending. How can anybody come away from watching something like this with any happiness? Obviously I don't understand Chinese culture but why would people get any pleasure from watching tragic endings? I don't understand it. If every show that I ever watched was always a tragedy I would be in a constant state of depression. Why cannot the boy and girl be happy at the end? Worst ending ever.
