One of my favorite school-wide projects in elementary school was drawing dragons in celebration of Chinese New Year. Each class would spend their art class period learning the basics of dragon drawing, and then they'd all be submitted in a school-wide contest. All of the drawings were displayed in the cafeteria, completely covering the walls. Several prize ribbons were given - best artist per grade, most creative, best overall. Mine always turned out more dinosaur in shape, and I never won recognition for my work, but I always looked forward to the contest. It was just so much fun, and it made our school really colorful for a week. Plus I truly enjoyed learning about a culture so completely different than my own - naming each year after an animal, on a calendar so much older than the Western one.
Did anyone else celebrate Chinese New Year at their school? It's coming up - February 1. Here is a link to learn more.
