One of my favorite school-wide projects in elementary school was drawing dragons in celebration of Chinese New Year. Each class would spend their art class period learning the basics of dragon drawing, and then they'd all be submitted in a school-wide contest. All of the drawings were displayed in the cafeteria, completely covering the walls. Several prize ribbons were given - best artist per grade, most creative, best overall. Mine always turned out more dinosaur in shape, and I never won recognition for my work, but I always looked forward to the contest. It was just so much fun, and it made our school really colorful for a week. Plus I truly enjoyed learning about a culture so completely different than my own - naming each year after an animal, on a calendar so much older than the Western one.

Did anyone else celebrate Chinese New Year at their school? It's coming up - February 1. Here is a link to learn more. :)

I too am fond of the Chinese calender. There is no denying that it has a festive flavor and must be respected for its history. Indeed, its easy for us int he West to forget how advanced Chinese culture has been throught history.

While my school didnt do anything as extensive as the dragons you mention; we did have Book jackets. That is, in Middle School, all students did an original design of a book jacket that they would also do a bookreport on. Some were painted elaboratley, some were much more simple. The works would go in the hallways with prizes awarded at the end of the week.

Hmmm.. Feb 3rd will be the beginning of the Year of the Sheep. The Female Water Sheep or Black Sheep, to be exact.

when i went to public school in california we got 2 days off for chinese new year.

Year 2003 is the year of Black Sheep, which contains Water, Fire, Earth and some Wood. Again, Water and Fire are incompatible as in 2002; Water and Earth are unfriendly. Fortunately, there is a little Wood inside the Sheep. When Water is fighting with Fire or Earth, Wood has a chance as the mediator between them. Also, 2002 Black Horse is a pair of male Fire and male Water; 2003 Black Sheep has a pair of female Fire and female Water. The conflict between males always comes stronger than the one between females. Therefore, the impact of the conflict between Fire and Water in 2003 is much lesser than in 2002. This means 2003 will be more peaceful than 2002 and year 2003 continues the Five Element cycle flow from 2002. Any unfinished business in 2002 will carry over to the next year until the fall of 2003.

Anyone interested in me telling them their fortune for the coming year?

What if it's bad.....Ummmm damn what if it's good.....Can I play???:D

I need the same info from you as well april-wine. And I might have to ask you some other questions depending on the outcome.

Mischka, you’re a Black (yang and water) Tiger, born in the year of Green (yin and wood) Rabbit. Your fire and water are both quite low but they are balanced.

You can expect the beginning of this year to go well for you, you’ll be in harmony with the year until the middle of summer where you’ll experience a money conflict which will drag on for several months until late fall. The signs suggest that you’ll over come most adversary situations, however and will have a (mostly) good year.

April-wine, you are a Black (Yang and Water) Dog, born in the year of Red (Yin and Fire) Sheep. Your wood is almost none existent so it won’t be able to help moderate the years events.

The bad luck that you acquired last year will be following you into the new one. February and March will be the best months for you this year, if you’re going to make plans, meet new people or end an old relationship do so soon. The fall of 2003 has a strong metal influence and will be unkind to you. There isn’t much you can do but buckle down and wait until next year.

Thank you, Never. From what I anticipate this year, that sounds quite accurate.

...If you don't mind?

*I forgot people do the slash thing in diff orders.

Well I knew about the "wood" thing.....;)

Hmmmm alot to look towards .....Thank-you Never.....

Chef, you’re a Green (yin and wood) Rabbit, born in the year of Brown (female and earth) Sheep. Wood is your strongest element while you have no water what so ever.

You have a lot going for you this year, if you manage to hold on until the end of it. Summer will be a breeze for you and spring won’t be bad either. You are going to see a number of changes, especially in your private relationships and while they might seem unpleasant at first you’ll think otherwise by the end of the year.

The signs also suggest that there’s a good chance at you having kids this year. I don’t know if you want kids or not though so act accordingly.

Says here on the placemat that I'm a dog. I'll have the hot n sour soup, a spring roll, some mu shui pork and some chicken in black bean sauce, please. And a Tsing Tao.

I'm glad you approve Mischka. :)

Silverlily, you’re a Red (yin and fire) Chicken, born in the year of Brown (yin and earth) Chicken. Your water is also quite low and so is your fire considering your connection to it.

While early spring is the most promising time of year for you, I’m seeing a serious conflict with your family sometime this summer that will make fall in love with the coming autumn. Someone you’re close with will start looking to you for help during late spring and might prove to be an emotional drain you’d do better without.
