The Chinese ambassador to Australia has threatened that China may boycott Australian imports if the Australian government continues to push for an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus outbreak.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison made news last week by asking for international support for an independent international investigation into the outbreak, which would presumably include an investigation into the Chinese government's handling of the crisis. Morrison reportedly even brought the issue up during the course of telephone calls with leaders from Germany, France, and the United States.

Nothing will come of it, Australia is just "gum stuck to China's shoe."

Would you mind elaborating on that?

From what I understand - economically yes, Australia is a midget for China, but it's important for regional/national/CCP security.
Especially since another recent development was that "Australia had sent a frigate to join three US Navy ships in exercises near an area where Malaysian, Vietnamese and Chinese claims clash."

"In the ‘‘Power Concert’’ of the Western Asia-Pacific region, America holds a crucial position: it is the sole superpower that could present major security threats to China. And it is the only country with the ability to impede or evenundermine China’s modernization progress.

Russia and Japan are major powers in this region. Russia is not a security threat to China. On the contrary, it is potentially a strategic partner in the face of American military and political pressure. Japan, to the contrary, is a potential security concern. The recent territorial spat over the Diaoyu (Senkaku) Islands in the East ChinaSea escalated into the two countries’ worst dispute in recent years, withbilateral relations plummeting to their lowest point since 1979.

The middle powers in this region include India and Australia. India has historical conflicts and territorial disputes with China.
Australia is the only Western power in the region that has no directstrategic conflicts with China. Although it is not a direct neighbour, it is apart of China’s ‘‘Greater Periphery’’ and, as such, is strategically important to Beijing."

Catch up on the news. "Gum stuck to China's shoe" is how a Chinese press outlet referred to Australia. Good diplomatic tactics, right?

Aah, I just saw it, indeed stupid as.

So I've been perusing ++ Canadian, Australian, UK and US news outlets, and it was striking and baffling how much more overtly anti-China the Australian ones are.
Whereas all the other countries are either a bit more toned down, or just a % of their media criticise China --- All Australian outlets do it, aggressively so.

Weird, since Australians had no more problems with Chinese espionage or the covid cover-up, than the other countries.
