I am seeking advice from a anyone here who has had experience with marketing novels. I would like to write one based on the life of a horse I once owned. His history was described to me by the Veterinarian who recommended him to me.

I need to decide who my audience should be. It might be a story that younger readers would enjoy. However the horse was severely mistreated in many instances during his life. The drama of his ability to survive, endure, and trust humans again, can only be revealed by describing these events. In some ways, his story is like the story of Black Beauty. That novel appealed to young audiences. But would it have been considered too violent for kids today?

There are other details that I need advice about. I would be grateful to find someone who would be willing to help me think these things through.

I'd recomend some reading of the major people in horse fiction, and do some research on various horse rescue places. I have seen several books about real horses that have been tied to a particular rescue and part of the profits go to the rescue. It also provides a market for the book and benefits the author.

You're average horse story market age is 11-13, and children that age are very developed with what they can handel, especially if it has a happy ending. Unfortuantly this market is also very formulaic, and anything outside is often not appreciated. But go for it :)
