Children's Poetry

Has anybody written poems for children? It's something I'd like to try and would welcome any advice. Are there any poets you would recommend?

Good morning Christian. :)

This is a big subject as it encompasses everything from nursery rhymes to lovely free verse by writers like Shel Silverstein to pretty serious classic stuff by poets like Rossetti and Dickinson, Yeats and Browning. I'd google it subject and look at the diferent styles, think about what works for you. The child's poetry archive has some pretty cool poems for kids by modern poets.

I've written a bunch of poems based on fairy tales that I sort of intend for children. Here is one:

His Shadow Speaks

And a link to another (not based on a fairy tale) that I wrote about my son.

I think it's like any poetry we write--read and find a style that works for you.

thanks for the advice, Angeline. I've read T.S Eliot's book of cat poems and Rossetti's poems, as well as Wallace Stevens nonsense stuff, will check out the contemporary poets.

I want to try and do something semi-serious

;)

Prelutsky

Try Jack Prelutsky. He recently (like last year, I think) released a book of haiku for children. Here's my fave:

If not for the cat,
And the scarcity of cheese,
I could be content.

He writes stuff other than haiku, too. I'm just very fond of that one.

Have you ever been goosed...
by a goose on the loose?
Followed them around
and felt like a caboose?

You know that a goose
knows no truce...
especially if they
are running around loose.

They may fly
high over a moose.
But they'll run with a waddle
from a rope with a noose.

And if you ever been goosed
by a goose on the loose.
you were probably walking
where they roost.

Now don't bend over
around a goose.
Stand up tall
and keep your clothes loose.

Cause you'll be in trouble
if a pair is a deuce.
Then you will surely be
goosed by geese on the loose.
