I need your help on this, pretty please.

My parents are in town. In my house, actually. And they need a bed. They're sleeping in mine right now, and I'm on the couch, which is why I really want to find a decent bed for them as soon as possible.

We're looking for something fairly cheap that will fit into our guest bedroom. Problem is that a box spring won't fit up the stairs, so we either have to go with a slat bed or two separate smaller beds (my parents are not peculiar).

We were thinking of something like an Ikea bed, lower price range, doesn't have to be solid wood, possibly build-it-yourself. But none of the stores around here have those kinds of beds, they are all higher-end and would never fit, nevermind that we don't want to spend that much money on a guest bed that won't be used a whole lot.

We're going to Chicago Tuesday because I need to get a new passport. So I was wondering whether there is anything like this in the Chicago area that we could stop by and have a look at, any stores that sell that type of bed? Any recommendations at all?

How long are your parents staying? I'd recommend a good quality inflatable, myself. That way when they're not here you can fold it up and use the guest room for other things.

Nope, not an option. My mom refuses (and my parents are the ones paying for the bed, so I can't put my foot down). Thanks for considering it, though. :rose:

Chicago area has two IKEA stores ... one in Schaumburg, right off of I-90 near Woodfield Mall and the other in Bolingbrook, right off of I-355 at the Boughton Road exit.

Schaumburg would probably be closer to your route back and forth to Chicago, as I'll assume you're probably coming down on I-94. Probably only about 20 minutes or so out of your way if traffic isn't too bad.

Okay, then. Hmmm . . . Unfinished furniture stores may have something in KD (knock-down) you could assemble. I really dislike Ikea because everything I've seen by them is really flimsy pressboard construction and I'd worry about people falling through it. Still, they may have something better that what I've looked at. It's worth a check. Besides, their meatballs are excellent.

YEAH! A nice vinyl one! Make sure that it is compatible with a variety of oils!!!! :D:D:D

(God, I just made myself hot, thinking about an oiled up Jen on a "wrestling" matress!! Woot!)

ETA: It's getting worse: Jen and her mom on... oh, never mind!

Thank you very much. I guess Ikea really is the only place we'd find this sort of thing, huh? And I was just informed, transport is another problem altogether.

Meatballs?

What about a futon?

I don't know a lot about futons, but my impression was that they're generally not very comfortable for longer periods of time, much like an air mattress. They're fine for a night or two, but when my parents stay here for three weeks or so at time, they do want a halfway decent bed, they said. Hence their continued mention of a slat bed. Maybe I'm wrong about the quality of futons though? I've never looked at them closely. And would a futon be broad and durable enough?

The Apartment Store. Check these links out Some of them are furniture stores; some of them are apartment rental places. You'll have to check them out one at a time, but The Apartment Store used to specialize in compact furniture for apartments. They were a kind of proto-Ikea with really cool stuff.

I know a couple places in the city but I don't know the names offhand.

Hope this helps.

What about a futon?

I think Cloudy (as brilliant as always) is right. We have a futon in our office and it serves as a place for Amy to sit and read while I am on the computer, but folds down into a queen sized bed if we need it. Make sure that you get the upgraded spring matress though. the foam ones aren't nearly as comfortable. I bet that there has to be a store that sells them in the Falls or SheXXXXXX. Then you can have it delivered.

Like Safe_Bet said, get the upgraded mattress, and you should be fine. My mother has one, and it's VERY comfortable/durable, plus there's the added benefit of having an extra couch when it's not in use as a bed.

IKEA would be your best bet for what you are looking for and a good price range. Have bought several beds from them in the past. Transport would be a problem unless you have a van or pickup truck, although I did use my car to get my stuff home, I didn't have far to travel.

You may want to look in Wally World if there is one near you. Another option that I have seen is Target. Barring that...*shrug*

Thanks, all. I'll look into the futon as well as Ikea offers, and I'll see what my parents like the best and what's going to be most practical. Thanks especially for the upgraded mattress hint - I think that might make a big difference.

ETA: It also seems like my parents' idea of what a futon is varies considerably from the American definition. That was part of the snag.
