Tommy sometimes got lost in the milk. Spinning, bubbling, spitting, steaming, foaming to the top of the pitcher, he shut off the steamwand when the temperature of the milk hit just over 140F, and set the pitcher down on top of the espresso machine. He tamped down a double shot and got it pouring, and took a look around as the creamy espresso poured into the cappuccino cup.

Tommy'd been working at the Au Lait Cafe for seven or eight months at this point, and he was already on his way to being a shift leader. He liked the closing shifts the best, because it was usually pretty chill, not like the morning rush of commuters needing their fixes.

There were always a few customers, but the Cafe became more of a hang-out at night, and Tommy liked that. They were slow enough that the new girl, Maggie, even had a little time to get some homework in. Tommy didn't mind, as long as she was able to help him out if they got busy.

Tommy poured the cappuccino as soon as the shots finished, leaving a nice rosetta pattern out of the foam on top of the drink.

"Cappuccino for Victoria," he said, loud enough to fill the small cafe, and he smiled as he watched Victoria walk towards the bar to get her drink.

Victoria sat off in the corner her camera around her neck, her feet under her as she typed on her keyboard. He mind and thoughts totaly engrossed in the task at hand. A paper on some photo's take by a favorite author of hers. It wasn't really a task as it was more a pouring out of thoughts. Ones she tried to make understandable for her professor.

Then she heard Tommy's voice reverberate though the cafe. Her drink steaming and waiting for her. She got up somewhat gracefully from her chair and walked over to the counter. Victoria always thought he was a cutie. She knew though he had a girlfriend but couldn't help flirt everytime she was here. Which was more often then she wanted to admit.

"That's me," she said winkined as she walked over smiling at Tommy. "How have you been hun?"

She stood off to the side, taking a sip of her drink. It was perfect. Tommy seemed to have a touch for making it just right. That was one reason she only stopped in when he was working. The other, well it was just him. Victoria would never tell him that though. Maybe she would, one never could say for sure.

That wink of hers made him blush a little bit every time she threw it his way, and this time was no different. He'd never said anything, but he sure had built up a crush on Victoria over the last couple of months, and seeing her in the cafe so frequently was one of the chief reasons.

"Nothin wrong with a crush, as long as you don't do anything about it," his girlfriend Nicole had told him.

He smiled at Victoria. "I'm great, thanks." He watched her sip her cappuccino, and the look of satisfaction on her beautiful face was all the thanks he needed. "How's that photography class going?" he asked her, wiping down the counter with a wet rag. "Still lovin' it?"

Victoria watched as Tommy wiped the counter. Noticing his hands, she had a thing for hands. Strong ones like his. They really did a number on her. He had no idea what that simple act was doing to her. So she just stood there smiling.

"Yeah class is great. You know me, photography freak," laughing pointing to her camera.

"Gonna hang out here for a little while, type a paper. I'm sure I'll bump into you again Tommy. Will you be working till close?"

She was curious. Sometimes his girlfriend would pop in butnot too often. Victoria always thought the girl didn't know what she had. Then again who was she to jusdge. She had no claim or say so she only stood back a spectator.

Maggie was humming to herself. Humming. Happily. With the resultant behavior, it was easy for a blind man to see why she was spritely. Her eyes all but closed, and her nose nearly wrinkled with each toothy smile. She was half an ounce soaking wet, if one was being generous, and her eyes always sparkled like brilliant emeralds.

She waved excitedly to Victoria as she came out of the little office. Now, Victoria was everything that Maggie was not, yet she was still placed on a pedestal. She was glamorous, not 'cute'. She was a siren, not a pixie and Maggie watched from afar with envious adoration. Even her boyfriend had commented that he wished she looked more like a number of other girls. Victoria seemed to make the count more often than most.

But he was taking her out tonight, and she was beside herself with excitement. 'Be there in about half an hour.' That was as good a promise as any and he'd made it to her tonight!

Micheal opened the door to the cafe and shivered a little. "Sure is cold out there", he said cheerfully to the man behind the counter. "Gimme something hot", he said while sitting down and taking out his laptop to work on his thesis for one of his college classes.

OOC: TheSilence, while I appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to jump in, this thread is closed for myself, Molly, and Crimson. While you are welcome to be a customer in the cafe, the general storyline/plot concerns Tommy, Maggie and Victoria. I must remember to declare these things closed in the first post.

IC: Tommy
Tommy smiled when he saw Maggie come out of the office. That little thing was so damn cute, and always plenty cheerful. There were definitely fewer customer complaints when she was working. Who would want to upset such a doll? He turned back to Victoria, to answer her question.

"I am closing tonight. Like every Friday night. You know I don't have a life outside this place," he said, chuckling as he turned to a customer he'd never seen before, who'd just come in from the cold.

"We have lots of hot options. What's your pleasure? Regular coffee, a latte, shot of espresso..."

Maggie set at her duties with renewed vigor. She always tried to help as much as she could, but let's face it... Tommy new coffee, and she didn't. Caramochiwhati? Most of the time she stood baffled as the commuters spit out their foreign language while Tommy just set to making the perfect... whatever it was.

Little Mags, as she called herself sometimes, just kept everything looking spotless. She knew how to build attractive displays. She knew how to pile those litte mugs just right and to show him which ones to take first so that the intriguing configuration would only grow moreso with each missing piece. She kept the equipment shining like new and never let a single item go out of stock.

It was getting later, and they were slow, so she decided to wipe down all the tables and chairs. Her secret, a little slice of lemon in the warm damp rag. A great antiseptic, and it doesn't smell so aweful as cleaners, her grandmother had always said. She took that to heart, and that was exercised every night when she made the furniture shine.

Victoria saw Maggie pop out the office and waved to her. The girl was so cute you just wanted to eat her up. The thought crossed her mind eveytime she saw her. Which was often as Victoria always seemed to be here. It was better then staying in the dorm and hell she would admit it, she felt Tommy and Maggie were both hot.

"Then I'll talk toy you later Tommy," she winked and walked beack towards her laptop.

Making herself comfy, tucking her long legs under her, she went back to work. Pounding away on her keyboard. Stopping to take a few sips here and there. The customers floating not bothering her at all. Stopping every so often she'd smile at Maggie who would come out and wipe down the tables. The girl was just a cutie.

"Hey Mags, a little busy tonight hu. How's school going for ya?"

Tommy watched Victoria walk away for a moment, before returning to the next drink order. After he set out the customer's vanilla latte, he walked over to the pastry case, feeling a bit hungry. He looked over the muffins and cookies, and then spied Maggie chatting quietly with Victoria. For a while he had been having some naughty thoughts about both those girls... now he was having naughty thoughts about the two of them together.

He shook his head. You have a girlfriend, and you love her a lot, he chastised himself in his head.

The naughty half of his brain shot back: maybe you wouldn't be having these thoughts if you had a girl that put out a little more often!

Now that was a thought he needed to banish. There was another customer, another drink order, and he tried to forget it all, but then he heard Victoria and Maggie talking...

"Hey Mags, a little busy tonight hu. How's school going for ya?"

"Ohh same old same old, you know the slave driver over there!" Maggie was horrid at deadpan and that showed as she giggled, inclining her head towards Tommy. "School's going ... alright. It's murder when I can't concentrate, though. I get to looking outside and my mind just flies right on out the window!"

She smiled brightly, the tiny dimples in her cheeks making an appearance beneath stray strands of red. "Oh! Clarke is comming to pick me up and take me out tonight. He said he'd be here in about 30 or so, I'm so happy! This will be the first time we're able to actually go out in... er.. well a LONG time!"

"Glad to here it hun. You deserve to have a little fun every now and then," Victoria told her.

She knew the little thing hadn't been out with her boyfriend in almost forever. Mag's was alway making comments about it. She was happy for her. Glad that finally she'd get what she wanted.

Victoria's gaze traveled over the shop. Looking at the customers, smiling. Lost as she stared into the abyss as most kids do these days. That was until she stopped on Tommy. She smiled and looked back to her computer. Mag's had already gone up to help a customer that entered the place.

How was it that two very attracive people to Victoria ended up with significant others. Seemed to be just her her luck she thought. Letting out a soft sigh as she finished up her coffee.

Was that a pang of jealousy he was feeling? He had overheard Maggie talking about finally getting to go out with her boyfriend, how she rarely got to see him. He wondered if she was in the same boat as he was: lots of pent-up horniness, not nearly enough time to release those demons with your lover...

Tommy set out a mocha for a customer and glanced back at the girls. He smiled, wiped down the counter, and then wandered over to Maggie and Victoria.

"So where's your boyfriend taking you for the big date?" he asked her. "Or is it a surprise?"

"So where's your boyfriend taking you for the big date? Or is it a surprise?"

She whirled to answer and lost her voice. Maggie had neglected to ask Clarke any of the details. She'd simply been so excited that he had actually answered his phone when she called! Most often times, she was waiting hours after leaving a message and then he was busy and owuld call her later. She was always found waiting for later, too.

"I.. well I don't exactly know, but I'm sure it's going to be great! He always has great ideas."

"Leaving it all up to him are ya Mag's. Brave girl, but hey if he hasn't let you down," Victoria stopped realizing the wrong choice of words. "I only mean that he chooses well for the times you guys go out. I'm sorry Mag's, I didnt think before I said it."

Victoria knew that there had been countless times her boyfriend had planned on taking her out and then let her down. She didn't mean for her words to come out hurtful. Maggie was a sweet girl, cute and seemingly innocent. Sometimes Victoria felt bad for her, wanted to help her but didn't know if Maggie would be just as willing.

"I'm sure you guys will have a great time. You'll probably be raving about it to us tomorrow I have no doubt," she said looking back at her screen.

"Yeah, Mags, we're gonna want all the details," Tommy said. He looked around. The place was spotless, as always. Everything in its place. Only a few customers, nobody needed anything, everything nice and chill. Still an hour or so till they would have to shoo everyone out the door.

Which was when Tommy's girlfriend walked in the door. He smiled when he saw her and rushed down to see her. They hugged, kissed on the cheeks, spoke for a minute. He went about making her a drink and as they talked, she gave a few dirty glares towards Mags and Victoria, before turning all sweet again for Tommy.

But he noticed. He gave her the vanilla latte she wanted, but with a short-pull on the espresso and a little too much vanilla.

She left a minute later. Tommy leaned against the wall and watched her leave. Tommy untied his apron after she was out the door and walked towards the back room. "I'll be back in a few," he said to Mags, and went out the back door for a much-needed cigarette.

Her normally pale, freckle sprayed face was about twenty shades of bright red as they asked their questions and placed an order for a post-date wrap up. She forced a smile and quickly returned to scrubbing a non-existant spot on the table at her right. 'Out, out damn spot!'

What she hadn't told them, is that on more than one occasion, roughly 80% of the times she had made up her fanciful dates with Clarke. Obscure plays, references to literary heroes long buried in the annals of fictitious love stories. Clarke... wasn't NEARLY as wonderful as she painted him to be.

Out of habit, she smiled brightly when Tommy's girlfriend came in. That smile, as usual, was met by a snarl that would melt marble. She returned to cloyingly sweet when looking at him though. 'Why in the world does she hate me? What did I do to her?'

As usual, Maggie was wounded and made herself scarce until the other girl left. Folding Tommy's abandoned apron neatly, she laid it by the register for his return. She had made the mistake of counseling him about smoking, once. Now, she just turned a blind eye and never lost her smile.

Victoria watched as Tommy's girlfriend came into the shop. Glancing over towards her and Mags, giving her normal welcoming stare. The woman just didn't like either of them and yet neither knew why. Victoria saw Tommy make her a drink and then watch the girl leave. What did Tommy see in someone like that?

Just as she thought it she saw him untie his apron and leave it laying on the counter. Probably needing a smoke after all that drama. Victoria was not one for that. She liked things mellow and simple. No need for adding to what drama life already held, she thought.

She went back to her laptop and continued typing away. Her fingers tapping lightly on the kayboard as she went. Words just flowing from her due to the fact she loved the topic. Before she knew it her drink was empty and her tummy was growling slightly. She needed something to munch on and something new to drink.

Walking over to Mag's she smiled, "Another hun and a slice of the bananna bread too. Need something to hold me over till I get a bite to eat later."

Maggie searched through the slices of their famous banana bread and finally found the largest piece they had. Placing it on a paper plate, she stuck it in the microwave for a few seconds to warm it. Not a usual practice when someone ordered a piece, but this was Victoria and she always warranted a little extra.

She set the freshly warmed treat down far enough from the laptop that it could still be reached, but wouldn't be in her way. She also set an ice cold bottled water nearby.

"I'll let Tommy refill your coffee, cause, well let's face it. He's sooooo much better at it than I am." She flashed her brilliant white grin as she set down a couple napkins to finish the snack layout.

Maggie glanced anxiously at her watch, a few minutes...and Clarke would be showing up at the door. He would walk in, handsome as ever, smile at her and sweep her away for a romantic dinner. She just knew he would. They had been dating for nearly three years. Mostly, when they spent time with each other, and he wasn't too busy, he'd just come over and they'd watch TV for a little bit. But they had gone out on about 12 dates. That was something. It would have been 13, but last week he had gotten so busy that he forgot to meet her at the restaurant. His study group had run late.

Any minute now...
